I have no idea who put the idea of a 944 into my head.
After a shock redundancy early in the year my finances were in a complete shambles, I was job-less and I already had access to a small economical vehicle that for all intents and purposes did the job perfectly well. Basically the last thing I needed was a 22 year old Porsche. But this didn't stop the niggling in the back of my head..
Luckily for me most of the ones I could find among the classifieds were several hours away which was enough to deter me initially, until one popped up locally. Long story short I went to view this blue 1988 2.5 Lux and after a spirited test drive and a good mulling over decided to leave the man a deposit. The following day I sheepishly drove out of the forecourt not knowing what was crazier. The fact I'd just bought a potential ticking time bomb/money pit that I didn't really need or the fact I'd raided the remainder of my savings to do so.
It's a 1988 2.5 Lux. Oval dash with cream leather which is in surprisingly good condition, really clean infact. The body and paint are in really decent condition and the engine is absolutely solid. The electric seats work, the heater works and it has central locking. The 15 inch teledials have literally zero scuffs on, and could actually be brand new. For all I know they could be, but they really are immaculate.
The digital clock has broke, the sunroof is missing the two arms that raise it, although the motors working fine.. and at the moment the radio doesn't work. The history is pretty much non existant and it's covered a fairly modest 126k. It's missing a dial for the heater controls, and it needs a new drivers side wing mirror, mirror.
It's not terribly bad economy wise, the steering is tight and the feedback is fantastic. It still pulls extremely well and is no slouch, and the 2.5 8v I4 screams terrifically at the top end. It's got so much character, and gets a fair amount of attention wherever I take it.
The day after bringing the car home I got an offer for a fantastic job opportunity with great prospects which I gladly accepted. After several months of rejections and disappointment it felt like a turning point for me, and this car is a symbol of this. My mother had also been told redundancy was on the cards for her and just this week has received word from the company that they have decided to keep her on and have offered her a better salary than she previously had. We've both had a pretty terrible year, and this news was like a breath of fresh air.

Congratulations on the purchase of such a gorgeous car, and your change of fortune.
I had an '89 944 2.7, which I sold in 2004, and have regretted it ever since. Part of the proceeds went towards buying myself a really nice old acoustic guitar, but I've since sold that - every time I played it, I'd feel really guilty!
