We all get the urge to let our cars loose a little every now and then. What cars have you driven that made you really think twice about doing so? What cars were you just not comfortable with at higher speeds?

Mine is my Clio Cup. It might be more agile than a barracuda but that thing is un-nerving if you floor it on a B-road. The steering is very light and too direct and it darts all over the road. And that's with the tracking sorted and new tyres.

The only one that stood out to me that I really didn't like pushing on in was a Mitsubishi Evo 7.

Great car, lovely to drive, scarily competent but it was begging me to push it harder and then the devil sitting on my shoulder saying "go on you know it will hold on"

I just had the sense to know that I would kill myself in that car when it decided enough was enough and I would have a big off.

I have always wanted to have a go in a Clio cup, they sound like a proper hoot too drive.

Well for me it was driving my dads BMW M3 E92 in the wet. I was driving from Swindon to Bath through the back roads, as I was coming from Lyneham. With even the most lightest amount of throttle in the lower gears, the rear would light up. This was the first time of me driving this car (fully insured) and combine that with track tyres which had zero heat in the wet conditions, it made for a very gentle drive home.

Another hairy drive was in a rev 3 MR2 turbo, this time it was in the dry, but with around 300hp (it had been modified) and very, very tail happy which I was trying to avoid. Especially as they have a snappy handling characteristic.

I've been 172mph (GPS) in a stock Supra which was a lot less scary than (an indicated)100mph in my OH's Yaris. The Ton in a Yaris is a truly scary experience.
My Clio 172 is fine up to about 120. I don't feel comfortable in my M3 at anything above that speed. I've been over 150 in several Supras and they all felt really stable and planted at high speed.

Have you tried getting your Clio's geometry checked (not just the tracking)?

I may have said this before, but the scariest thing I've ever driven was a Fiat Uno that I had to drive to the scrap yard while it was full of scrap. It was scary getting it up to 50mph, I think it slowed down more with wind resistance than the brakes.

A speedo indicated 115mph in a standard Ka. Obviosly it was not doing that but even 100 in those cars are just lethal.

5 or so posts in and nobody's mentioned TVR? You disappoint me people.

I wouldn't say it's scary as such but my kit car, being mid-engined and very light means that when near the limits of grip it's quite prone to sudden massive over steer you need to be very quick to catch if you are too aggressive with the throttle etc.

Also the first time in a Caterham 7 type car was a bit intimidation because I wasn't in control and they are quite exposed.

It's going in for the full works tomorrow as I've just stuck a new set of tyres on it. We'll see if anything is out. Whatever the cause is, it's no where near as stable and confidence-inspiring as my DC2 was!

I love how Supras really seem to hunker down and get to it when they are going quickly, so stable and undramatic its very reassuring, its as if you can feel the downforce. My BMW is pretty good at making not a lot of drama of 100mph+ speeds yet you can tell its not as aerodynamic but the 8 series is the best so far, its so quiet, stable and effortless.

Makes me wonder what a Veyron is like. Im sure its very impressive by how dull it makes it.

Crossfire in snow and ice on a private track in the states.

REALLY unsettling, absolutely no traction.

Mustang GT felt so much safer in comparison, thats how bad it was.

Can't say I have been scared in anything in the UK.

An AE86 that had nankang tyres that were smoked off and were down to the wires on wet roads. Not something I'd like to repeat any time soon.

I've only just stumbled across this thread, and I was certainly about to nominate my TVR 350I.

It needs the geometry setting up as I have replaced a lot of tired old parts that were worn out when I bought it, but even at modest speeds it is twitchy, has bad steering kick-back, brakes aren't great and in the rain at night it's hard to see anything in front or behind.
Plus, you never know which part is going to fail or fall off next (the lights all switching off at 50mph or so down a dark lane at night and the bonnet flying up after a hinge bolt fell out at 60+mph after overtaking three cars on an A-road were both exciting moments!).

But it does mean I can get an adrenaline rush without risking my license, it's my only car and I think it's great!

My truck. Corners like it's on stilts, with good reason. Looking forward to trying to thread it down some twisty B-roads when it eventually makes it to UK shores.

I never got that far - took one out for a blast but the mind-bogglingly heavy steering at parking speeds didn't lighten 1 iota making it like punting a brick - admittedly a nimble brick - around the place...

I'd no wimp either - the R5GT lacked power steering but it didn't feel like the steering was attached to a large elephant which was determined to win the tug-of-war...

Scariest car I've had was a Mk3 Astra 1.6 'Sport' - it was unbelievably game for a car of it's spec and power BUT moderately sweeping corners at speed produced a very 'light' feel from the backend, which I just put down to me being over-cautious RIGHT upto the point it swapped ends rather suddenly - somewhere it had no right to be doing that...

No damage done but I drove it somewhat more sedately for the rest of it's tenure...
