Battery removal - what spanners?

Yes I'm aware it's a Noddy question

What tools do I need to remove a very, very dead battery from the footwell? And do I need to jack the car up, bearing in mind I haven't got a jack. I've got the Bible, so I've a good idea of what to do, just not what with.

On mine, a 13mm and a 10mm spanner for battery terminals. Mine is not fixed to the floor so you do not need to jack it up to remove two bolts to the battery box. These can be unscrewed without jacking it up. However, to rebolt back on a jack is needed since this can be a big pain! Hence, mine has stayed wedged, is not bolted, and is not going anywhere.

No jack is required to remove or put back......

Mark the floor before removing the bolts from underside, so you know where to slide it back to...

when rebolting back in position should easily find locate the fixing nuts on box .. ... not as much as an issue as the Bible makes out

I was talking to someone about this last year in case I needed to replace the battery (so far all good with an Accumate) and understand that the battery box has a lid which is (?) fixed on with pop rivets - is this correct and if so what has everyone done - put new rivets in/self tappers/nothing except put lid back on, etc. Info to be filed away for future use (well hopefully a bit in the future...)

Yes, the battery box 'lid' is rivetted to the body. Just drill them out and use new with washers to spread the load.

None of ours has a lid. Guess it was binned years ago due to the difficulty of squeezing it in that space.
1/2" or 13mm on ours for the terminals and maybe 10mm or 13mm (can't recall) for the 2 bolts that hold the battery box from the underside. Juyst make sure you mark on the floorpan where the 2 front corners of the battery box sits otherwise you may struggle to get the box back in the same place.

My '92 Griff has no signs on the battery box of ever having a lid.

I ground the end off a spanner especially for the job, if you make one that's about 3" long and nicely radiused the job is so much easier
