After a new series to watch with my girlfriend. We have just done watching all the series of How I Met Your Mother and Dexter and want something new.

She doesn't like The Big Bang Theory and I have seen all series of House.

Any suggestions?

Seen some episodes of that, it's ok, but nothing overly exiting.

Going to see what Cougar Town and Burn Notice are like.

Breaking Bad is well worth watching. The 4th season has just begun in the US.

Arrested Development and Rescue Me have been my two favorites recently.

Justified looks good too.

Human Target?

The Big C is great, and now in the second season.

These are the main series i have watched over the last few years that are worth checking out (and aren't on your list!):
- Breaking Bad
- Eastbound and Down (this might not be ideal for your situation!)
- Weeds (first few seasons)
- Chuck
- How to Make it in America (this would be a good one to try)

Surely the whole point about a show like Dexter is it isn't a genre show but is unique, you can't really watch another show 'like it'.

Soprano's if you want some serious drama (and its also awesome)

Chuck if you like silly humour, spy action and lots of gaming/film cultural references

Archer if you want immature, hilarious animated spy action

I'll second The Wire, its an awesome TV show.

I've been watching Nip / Tuck on my night shifts recently, I bought the box sets years ago.
Not usually the thing I'd watch, a show about plastic surgeons, but its very good, some good music, twists and turns, and the surgery scenes aren't for the squeamish!

Does HIMYM stand for "how I met your mother"? As I'm surprised nobody's mentioned that there are NO shows like those two!

However, like Dexter are;

Breaking Bad (probably the best show on TV right now!)
The Wire (awesome show, unlike house they made no fuss from having English actors in starring roles!)
Nip/Tuck (used to be good, I lost interest in newer series but you might like it!)

Like HIMYM;

Rules of Engagement (not as funny as HIMYM, kind of like HIMYM's poorer cousin!)
Raising Hope
Sh*t my Dad Says (based on a book and only one series long, worth it for the Dad lines!)

Just started The Wire - got 2 episodes of the first season left - the Wife and I are thoroughly enjoying it.

The Wire is indeed excellent.

Dead Like Me and Six Feet Under are worth digging out too.
