BMW Evolution codes

This may have been asked before but the search doesn't bring anything up...

I have been wondering about the E30/E36/E92 etc denominations, and found out they are the chassis evolution codes. What I still haven't found out though: what happened to the missing numbers? Are they designs that didn't make it to production?
This changed to F in 2008, but why not carry on with E?

Nothing life changing here, but it's one of those things that just stick in the back of my mind and bug me...

Inbetween would be other ideas they never made.
I guess BMW didn't want any 3 digit numbers so changed the F's.

It was also a change to give different E numbers to different body styles which is something they never did before.
