Hi all

I need some help please!
My 1.8 16v astra g sport failed the emissions retest. It's not the lambda sensor as this is brand new and I've run the car hard and hot before with redex.

Everytime the CO measurement increases the lambda measurement decreases.

It just about made it in then all of a sudden the CO reading dramatically increased!

I've scanned in the failure doc below, does anyone have an idea of what it could be?
we hooked it up to diagnostics but nothing come up (except egr valve as I've blacked it off but to my knowledge this isn't part if the mot test)
Much appreciated

Surely increased CO means only one of two things?

1 - your cat is knackered - it's job is to convert CO into CO2
2 - your engine is running rich which means unburnt/part-burnt fuel is reaching the exhaust which would peak your CO AND damage the cat (so we're back at 1)

Either way you're looking at a fuelling issue and a new cat I suspect.

Realistically, are you looking for a bodge for the MOT or a proper solution to your pollution? (There's an album title there!!)

I'm told by 'those in the know' that there's tricks in-terms of adjusting your fuelling and/or packing your cat with a temporary CO absorber but it's naughty - obv - you're poisoning people and all that (but not damaging the ozone layer as much, ironically!!)

Just a quick thought, but you mention the car has a new lambda sensor. Is it a vauxhall version specifically for your car?

The reason I ask is that I have heard of lambda sensors that weren't OEM (eg. purchased off Ebay) being fitted to vehicles and the emissions going down the pan as a result.

Ideally I'd like to solve it but I'll look into the 'temporary' fix...
The emissions failed at the first test so I replaced the sensor which seemed to help matters but it just wouldn't go down enough. I might try the cat converter next

Yes, I need to get a decent car too.

OP: I think you need a new cat.

Cats are very fluffy and cute and will make you happy while you figure out your CO problem!

Some aftermarket cats are shockingly st - I've no idea what's inside them but it's not that elaborate mesh of platinum we're told should be in there!!

I suspect the old lambda failed a while ago, which caused rich running, which burnt the cat, which in turn has caused your emissions failure. It can be a vicious circle and the only real way to break it is to replace both at the same time.
Not too expensive on the G and dead easy to do.

Difficult to say fit it and see is probably the only way to find out for sure.

The specialist garage I use who rebuild racing engines are particularly good with emission resolution. They rolling road set up they use allows them to dial out most of the excess emissions.

They regularly do this for other garages and from the number of trade set ups they do it obviously works.

They are in Stirchley Birmingham. If you are interested by all means PM me

I have no connection with them other than finding them head and shoulders above everybody else they rebuilt my Exige engine which blew its head gasket (K series) three times before they had it in, and 60,000 miles and 5 years later NO PROBLEMS.

Is the car fitted with a genuine parts cat or has it had a cheapie A.N.Other make fitted?
Went through all this with my eldest's Pug 306 couple of years ago, pattern cat failed repeatedly on high emissions. Fitted used genuine parts cat - NO other changes - & emissions dropped to virtually zero & an easy pass.

Could always put a hole in the exhaust and cover it up.

Get some fresh air into the mix.

.
that will totally screw the figures up
a Golf I had to get through was failing due to an air leak into the exhaust
I'd be looking for exhaust leaks, get the engine nice and hot before the test
if you have more than one tail pipe block the other when the probe is in the tail pipe.
