My 212,000 mile 1998 Golf

good cars mine has 141k on it, all still feels pretty good..actually quiet fun to drive..always does 55+mpg even on stop-start driving...65+ on a longer run


good workhorse, these are holding money and if anything slowly creeping up in value (much like the old Audi 80 TDIs)

edit to add, mine is a CL (not sure how it differs from yours, all looks the same inside and out...although mine has steel wheels)

Nice story.

My mother had a '94 1.8 GL similar to this and I remember it feeling incredibly solid. What was surprising though was how badly it rusted. Despite being low mileage and well looked after it had rust spots on the doors and tailgate when we got rid of it at about 10 years old. My own mk 2 golf I had at the same time had hardly any rust despite being 10 years older. I heard that VW used water based paint on the mk 3 for environmental reasons and it was hopeless at resisting corrosion.

Ive got a 1998 poverty spec mkiv golf, over 100k and most of that in and around Glasgow. The only rust worth mentioning is on a front wing that was a replacement part many years ago. Satisfyingly solid cars.

Airbags used to come with a "replace by" date, generally of ten years. Manufacturer's investigations revealed litttle or no deterioration in the pyrotechnic materials and other parts over that time thus extended their service life to 15 years. Further research has shown that airbags are likely to remain fully operational for many years and their service life has been extended to the life of the car in most cases. The VW airbag system is likley to have some form of self diagnosis too and will illuminate the airbag light if there is a problem. The airbag is as likley to work on this Golf as it is on any car.

Nice,ive had in the past a Mk2 golf gti 8v that had done 200k,was much quicker than my friends that had done 80ish,and a Vento VR6 that had done 250k and was still going!
