Oil pressure sender .... 90 PSI on the gauge!

Just back off my jolly holl’s so thought I’d take the car out for a quick spin tonight…
So got her out and set off up the road…. All normal until I looked at the oil pressure gauge… It was maxed out at 90 PSI !!
So stopped and re-started.. light went out as normal, so came back home and had a look… looks like my sender has had it.. the spade bit is wagging about like a dog’s tail…. So must have been hit by a stone or something?...

Anyways.. I need a new one… are they standard Rover units? (1999 Serp engine).. looking at the usual sellers they are wanting big money for the things?.. any advice?..

Did see a post by Chimpafrolic saying he’d fitted a E-Bay special in April this year.. wonder if its still going?..

My cheapo Ebay sender is still working perfectly.

Fitted and working .. arrived the next day.. as you say, 65 psi and 45 psi when hot.. so you think this is more in-line with the actual then?...
When you turn off and turn back on again.. it sits at about 10 psi and very slowley drops off over a few min's... does the system retain it's pressure this long??
Anyway... its working better than the last one was.. cheers..

Anyone checked the output of the ebay unit against a mechanical gauge?

Are the outputs people are getting the same as their previous units before it want AWOL?

I'm after a new one again

From how it compares on my 500, its very close.
Old one read about 30 on tick over and 60 driving around.
New one has about 10 with engine off and ignition on, which old one did not do.

So its providing good info.

John, which one did you go for in the end.

i`m considering a mechanical one and putting it where the clock is. The loud ticking of the clock seriously gets on my nerves anyway. Also the clock can be removed from the glove box area without the need for removing the whole dash.

If you read the attached post above.. it says there that people have tested at around 65 psi on the mechanical, and that what they are seeing on the new senders...

No one has confirmed in the attached thread which I read at the time as well and others since a comparative test between the new senders and a trial with a proper oil pressure reader, mechanical. People have suggested they get better readings, but that seems to be just higher readings and others have suggested fitting a mechanical gauge and sender. I can't find anywhere in that thread or others where someone has made the comparison, only against what their old sender read and that the new one is reading higher. Which makes me nervous when if it says 25 and it's really 5 for example, it would not be good as I like my engine as it is

Hence my question remains unanswered unless I'm missing the point somehow or you can highlight the comparative between mechanical and new? Please?

I am very hopeful that this is a cheap alternative as I am soon to be on my 6th OPS after 85K miles and am fed up with the stupid pricing, but I'm also loathed to just whack on a new sender that gives me great readings when I have no evidence to their validity. Great efforts have been put in by Chimpaholic, I'm just more reserved about these things perhaps. It concerns me that people are registering pressures when their engine is turned off etc etc and I wondered other than new higher pressures making anyone feel better whether anyone had yet done the test.

My old gauge read accurately having been checked at the time of re-build so I am 99 percent confident in the OEM kit, but the readings people are suggesting here do not compare with mine and therefore I remain to be convinced, with crossed fingers.

Any help much appreciated.

At the end of the day 99% don't need to know if the reading is perfect. If its giving reliable live info if you have decent pressure or not who cares if a reading is a midges Dick over or under.

Anyway, its irrelevant as no tvr has ever broken down!

Isn't it in the link... must have been an e-mail then... but someone had done a mechanical check showing just over 60 psi and the new senders confirm this... so they are right at 60 and a bit say....
I also know how much mine drops as it gets warm... and it appear to be okay here also... and its also right at zero?... so looks quite liniear?.. but I cant say for sure...
Give one a try and see what you think?.....

You could try mounting it on the side of the front cover instead of the underneath so its a bit more 'sheltered' Johno?
