I have my new Pioneer VSX-920-K AV Receiver hooked up to my SKY HD box via HDMI. However, I soon learned that HD audio is not supported with the HD box (why??) I bought an optical cable and fitted that to the Sky box and receiver - but obviously, the sound is now on a different setting to the HDMI input for Sky.

I was hoping that only one HDMI cable was to be plugged into the back of the TV, making only 2 cable in total - but it now seems that I need to plug the Sky HD HDMI cable into the back of the TV to get the 5.1 Digital audio from receiver!

Is the latest 1TB SKY HD capable of HD sound via the HDMI? If so, I may upgrade.

Have others mentioned this, then?

I find it strange that HDMI is capable of both HD video and sound, but the SKY HD box doesn't allow this!

ETA - Have just googled, others have mentioned it.....

Yeah, Sky HD box simply won't send Dolby Digital over HDMI.

You shouldn't need to run a HDMI from the Sky box to the TV though. Every amp I have had have allowed you to have picture over HDMI and an option to change the audio input to a different digital input.

So, simply connect a HDMI and the optical from the Sky box to the amp and a HDMI from the amp to the TV. You should be able to change audio from HDMI to optical. Have a look through the input settings and/or the manual on how it's done on the Pioneer.

I think you're right, am sure my receiver does allow this - but haven't had time to read through the hundreds of pages contained in the manual yet. The HTPC works fine via the HDMI cable to receiver - SKY HD isn't the 'up to the minute' tech it pretends to be.....
