Which Multi tool?
Discussion
Hi,
looking for a decent multi tool? Budget around £50-100. Anyone recommend one? I saw the 'Bear Grylls (Gerber) Ultimate Multi Tool' in a magazine that got a good review but was wondering how of that price is his name.. have had some cheap crappy ones in the past but they have broken or bent...
Gerber or Leatherman seem to be the brands to go for?
cheers

both are superbly made
sorry I've never had a Gerber so can't comment on them, but I imagine they are very good too

I've had my Wave for 14 years and it hasn't even blunted. Thread over IMO.
I really like the one handed opening of the original Gerber tools, as pliers are my usual weapon of choice. The screw driver blades are very strong and durable, however the knife blades on the more recent Gerber are usually part serated, which isn't ideal for a lot of uses and I've found all the Gerber knife blades to be quite brittle. My Gerber tools now lie in a drawer all with broken knife blades.
On the other hand, my 3 year old Leatherman Wave is still in active service. Although it requires two handed opening and the pliers are not as strong as the Gerber ones, the knife blades are much more forgiving and easier to sharpen. The tiny reversible screwdriver blade as pictured is very useful but not very well secured and I've lost a couple of bits. The screwdriver bits in general are not as versatile as the Gerber ones.
So, if someone could combine the best aspects of both these tools, I'd buy one tomorrow.
