Fortunately not for me but for some good friends of mine who are about to have child no. 3 - they have decided that they now have to give in and get an MPV as the family car. Following several years ownership of one of those hateboxes that is a C3 they aren't keen on going French this time around and are currently looking at the German or Japanese options.

This isn't really my area of expertise so my advice so far has been to avoid anything with a 1.6 petrol engine as I can't see it having enough power to actually cope with that much weight and to avoid going automatic (they are happy with manual cars and I don't see the point of adding weight and complexity).

Currently being considered are a Toyota Verso or a Mazda 5 - around about an '08 vintage seems to be in their price range. Living on the Isle of Man they don't do mega mileage but would still like it to be pretty economical for the mileage they do which is mostly short trips of anywhere from 5-25 miles of town/a-road (seeing as the island has no motorways they will only be doing m-way mileage on the 3 or 4 occasions a year they bring the car over here).

They aren't too worried about toy levels or luxury they are concerned about the car's reliability and practicality. Current children are a 7yr old and his brother who is near as makes no difference 3, in addition to the three children there will be a need to carry a third adult probably 3-4 times a month (hence it needs to be a 7 seater) - so really I'm asking the good people of PH as to what they think, are the on the right track? Anything they should be avoiding/looking out for?
