PistonHeads Tall Ships Day: Sailing

You've signed up for the Sunday Service, but now we need to get you out on the ocean waves

Not so long ago we announced a nautical Sunday Service, to take place in the glamorous location of Southampton docks. As is the norm for PHSS meets, the car spaces filled up swiftly and we look forward to welcoming a few hundred of you to the docks on the 7th August.

Sailing superstar Andy (from the Jubilee Sailing Trust) is the man who has helped make this meet possible, and he has asked us to remind you that there is still the opportunity to set sail on the morning before the PH meet, which sounds good to us.

Andy will point the good ship Tenacious towards open sea on the morning of the 7th, and he has space for 50 PHers to join him. Forget your supercars, this is your chance to steer a hulking-great ship worth £14 million. No pressure then...

The itinerary is as follows:

08.15 - 08.30 - All aboard

09.15 - Depart to cries of Ahoy (perhaps)

09.16 - Start sailing, working the decks, eating (repeat) under the orders of Captain Andy

10.30 - Subject to weather and emergencies the Coastguard rescue helicopter will carry out a winching exercise. Bear in mind that the masts on Tenacious are 42 metres tall, then factor in the waves, and it all adds up to an exciting spectacle.

15.00 - Moor up to the sight of a few hundred PH cars and owners staring at you

15.30 - Lower the gangway and welcome the land lubbers aboard

Tenacious was built to allow disabled passengers the chance to sail in exactly the same way as an able-bodied person. As such we welcome people of all ages, disabilities and abilities onboard. Don't be afraid to sign up if you have never sailed before, that's all the better in this instance. As mentioned, space is limited to 50 people and places are priced at £125 per person. Children over 12 are permitted when accompanied by an adult.

To book a space, or ask a question, contact Andy here

Parking: We are currently full for the Sunday Service. Thanks to the good work of Andy and the Associated British Ports Southampton, however, he has managed to secure an additional 50 parking places for those who sail in the morning.

So if you're on the parking list for the main PHSS, but decide to sign up to the sailing, please remove yourself from the list, freeing up a space for those on the reserve list. Good news all round!

Andy has also laid on some catering at the event so we can all eat, drink and be merry. We've also got music with '71 Chain' (you heard them here first) playing from 18.00.

This link will explain where we are going to be on the day

Ooooo, Arrrr...this might be ok

Do we get to fire cannons and board other ships and rape and pillage and stuff like that...?

I'm only talking French ships here, obviously...

Will be there all day, can get there to help on the gate etc, but can't sail - just can't justify it with no job ATM, much as I want to!

I did this a few weeks ago on the Tenacious with the JST - fantastic fun climbing up the rigging!

What is the likelihood of the sails being unfurled ?

Mrs B is tempted, she had a brilliant week on the the Winston Churchill a few years ago

With the price of fuel we'll be setting them as soon as possible hehe The wind on the day will decide though.

About 10yrs since the Winston Churchill sailed as a training ship I think. Was sold and unfortunately burnt to cinders about 2 years ago in refit.

One slight change for me, mrs maser might be busy, so will bring my mate (and also normally 'Mate', as the proper nautical term goes) instead.

Put me down for morning or forenoon watch, I only get back from China on Friday so will be up nice and early Sunday morning, and dead to the world by mid afternoon!
