I nearly did something stupid today.

I'm looking for a new tow car, so I have been searching PH eBay Autotrader all week. Somthing like a Disco or landrover, maybe an ML.

But today I spotted a nice Rolls Royce Silver Shadow in my price. I have grown up with these, it was even the first car I ever drove on my own. (I was on private land and I was about 10)

I had managed to persuade myself it would make a good tow car, lots of torque very comfortable. Just a nice place to be, wafting down to a race track or event.

Anyway it turns out its already sold, maybe a lucky escape.

What are the running costs like, are they similar to fast german barges where they are cheapish to run until it goes wrong or is it more like the never-ending wallet rape of old italian exotica?

Somewhere in the middle, main problems are rust and brakes / suspension, which need to be done properly or you'll be doing it again in 12 months

If those things are DIY jobs (except the bodywork) then it can't be too bad.

The oldies make the best tow cars,

I recently struggled towing a half ton horse trailer behind a 100 BHP Suzuki 4WD. Had to rev the whatnot's off it to get anywhere.

Back in the day [1966 or so] I used a 1600cc Hillman Minx a few times, with about half that power, to tow a fully enclosed twin axle racing car trailer, with a weight of about 1.5 ton. The Suzuki would have lay down & died. These high spirited modern ponies aren't a patch on the old horses, when it comes to doing any real work.

Right now I'm using my Triumph TR7 to tow that same horse trailer, no trouble, but it's doing it with the best part of a ton of horses in it.

Get the Rolls. If they weren't so dear in Oz I'd do it myself. I'd love to turn up at the dump with a trailer load of rubbish, behind a Rolls. People make enough fuss when I do it with the 7.
