RUF Revises CTR3

Ridiculously rapid RUF revealed (that's enough alliteration - Ed)

RUF's CTR3, the Porsche so modified that it isn't really recognisably a Porsche any more, has received a series of tweaks that make it faster and, well, even more insane than before.

This is the third 'generation' of the CTR 3, which has been around since 2007. Its mid-mounted 3.8-litre twin-turbo boxer unit now produces 49bhp more than before, giving it 740bhp at 7100rpm, with 708lb ft of torque available at 4100rpm.

Putting that power to the rear wheels is a newly re-designed, transversely mounted, six-speed sequential transmission.

The sprint to 62mph is the same at 3.2 seconds, while 125mph is reached in 9.6 seconds. Top speed increases a couple of mph to 236mph (why so slow? - Ed).

These things are lovely. Rather mad, but have fantastic road presence. If this is a new version though, why are they not using the latest PCM unit?

personally i would want an increase in sprint time to warrant the extra as that is what will be used more frequently than top end ... still nice though

They say "isn't recognisably a Porsche", so if any (non-porsche tuner) firm has made this car, we wouldn't notice the porsche link? This car is bonkers, but to say it doesn't look like a porsche is a bridge too far imho.

They say "isn't recognisably a Porsche", so if any (non-porsche tuner) firm has made this car, we wouldn't notice the porsche link? This car is bonkers, but to say it doesn't look like a porsche is a bridge too far imho.

Ah, i see what you mean, i must read slowly next time, although i do think its more about styling cues, take the dash out, lose the headlamps and take the bonnet front edge away and i think it does become more generic.

even RUF have realised that the engine in the middle is better than the rear..

but this is the company that puts a v8 in a 911..which i don't think is actually that bad..

It's based on a Cayman in the same way that that manic Hennessey Venom thing is based on an Exige. So it's been elongated, chopped around and altered to the point of barely being recognisable.

I think these are fantastic. There's a black one that's occasionally parked up at Silverstone, they look properly menacing in the flesh and are quite unusual as far as supercars go. At about EUR300,000 (last time I checked), surely one of the cheapest off-the-shelf ways to get past 225mph?

Is it? I thought this was a custom space-frame, the Venom actually uses the Exige tub, I think.

Surely it's mounted longitudinally, you know, on the end of the engine?

Or are you referring to the actual gearbox mounts?

Actually, it's not based on the Cayman at all. It does in fact start out life with a load of 911 bits, however, the chassis is completely bespoke and has nothing to do with any Porsche model.
