This morning I test drove an 07plate White MCoupe that drove briliantly and was in excellent condition. It is a main dealer car and the sales chap was very helpful. However, the car is on at £22k which is a bit overpriced but I managed to knock him down a bit. Unfortunately though when going through the paperwork what did turn up is that it in due an Inspection 2 in 6months at a cost of nearly £1300 at my local dealership.

Additionally the insurance is nearly £800!

I've just sold a Ferrari 348 that was costting £450 on insurance and £450 for an annual service. By my calc that make it way more affordable to own and run a Ferrari than it does a BMW! Those prices are ludicrous and I think it is enough to now opt for a Porsche Cayman S or Boxster S!!!

willing to bet that £450 service is not done by a ferrari dealer, and that the £1300 is with a BMW dealer so that's not really fair in that point, plus, the inspection II service is not every year, it's every 2 years, the inspection I service is considerably cheaper.

not sure on the insurance though, bare in mind insurance has gone up, if you were to re-quote your 348, are you sure it's still £450?

Yeah the inspection II is expensive but it's only every 4th service thats quite that pricey.

It's the same as having the 18k service with cambelt and valves on the 348... Which unless your indy is a saint will set you back more than the Z4M Inspection II

And I guess you could get the Insp II for nearer to £1000 somewhere else

How much is a major service inc valve clearances on a 348, £1250(?), and that is a specialist not main dealer price, that also does not include the timing belt that the car needs every 3 years which would probably see little change, if any, from £2000............. compare apples with apples and it does not appear so bad does it?

eta, what flimper & slurms have said is also correct, negotiate the Insp II into the deal.

Funnily enough no! I thought it was ridiculous; myself (35) and my wife (32) with full no claims and clean licenses. I've been driving 18yrs and my wife 15yrs; it seems ridiculous as we've always had very cheap insurance in the past. Premiums have gone up far higher than I realised.

Modern Fast cars are more expensive to insure than classics.... Fact

Modern fast cars are used by normal people every day so higher risk than classic, which arnt used every day and are owned by beardy types.

the Z4M won’t have enough volume to be modelled separately by the insurance companies so will probably be scaled using a combination of M3 / Z4 models, both probably driven by riskier
M3 - drug dealer
Z4 - girls / hairdressers

try a Broker, is you want a cheaper limited mileage policy

Also, regarding the specialist vs main dealer servicing, it isn't quite that straight forward. Mainly because the Ferrari is better at a specialist who sees the older cars more often and future buyers are not put off by having specialist stamps in the book. However, on a Z4MC you need to have main dealer servicing to maintain the extended warranty, and even if you aren't worried about the warranty there are many buyers that would be put off by indy service stamps come resale.

So actually the like for like people are talking about doesn't actually stand up!

I have just spoken to another BMW dealer who was very embarrassed when he rang me back to tell me his figure of £1200; he said he had to recheck it 3 times to make sure it was right; he did say he may be able to do something with price to get it between £900-1000 but only because I have my other car serviced with them!

Shop around. Mine's insured for similar ages and ncb's for £400. Started at £300 3 years ago before the premiums rose.

It certainly doesn't stand up when you comapre an annual 'oil service' on a 348 with a 'full on as big as it will get' inspection II service on a BMW and come to the conclusion that it is cheaper to service a 348.

ETA, on the insurance front, is the 348 on a limited mileage policy? Is the quote for the BMW the same?

I'd definitely shop around for the insurance. I live in London, have 3 years driving and 2 years NCB and I pay about that much.

I spoke to a dealer reagrding the warranty issue and apparently it has to be a service department approved by BMW not exactly a main dealer i was told this by someone at a main delaer so i assume it to be true as i have been looking into purchasing a Z4MC then obtaining the warranty.

My insurance was £410, Thats me and wife and i have just renewed it in the last month, As for servicing, It goes oil service, inspection 1, Oil service, Inspection 2, oil service and so on, As interval on low milage car's is every 2 yrs, The inspection 2 is only done very rarely, And i would think the ferrari is every 6 months,

Just looking through some invoices for my CSL (S54, so comparable). I paid £702 inc VAT for my ins 2 @ BWM Park Lane, albeit in 2009.

Definitely shop around.

Excellent, thank you! I think prices are going up considerably at the moment.

I think what I will actually be better off doing is buying a car that has already had the Inspection 2 done! Anything around 33k miles should have had it done. Obviously these will be cheaper cars too!

I spoke to another main dealer today about a Z4MC they had and the women I spoke to was absolutley uselss. She knew so little about the car that it is quite likely she was actually the cleaner that picked up the phone! I asked about tyres and they were different front to back (I didn't even recognise the name of manufacturer of the tyres on the back); She was adamant that it was absolutely acceptable to have different tyres front to back, in fact she was actually quite rude about it. If I hadn't been so busy I would have spoken to the dealer about it.

My local dealer charge £800 for inspection 1 and £850 for inspection 2. Inbetween each of those is an oil service which is about £180. That's main dealer prices, hardly a fair comparison with a specialist.

Z4m's on inspection 2 already wow. Must be a high miler. Well my insurance is due shortly and the quote dropped thru my letterbox today. All I can say is I may have to rethink my current 2 car setup. Prices have gone up alright. Defo going to shop around for a better deal.

Inspection 2 is at about 45-50k miles (intervals are about 14k miles)
