Ok, this seems like a simple one but seems to have my builder (and myself) stumped.

Currently decorating the lounge and want to add in discreet cabling for a surround sound setup. The builder has chased cable (in trunking) into the wall for the rear speakers at a suitable height but wants to put a blanking plate on the terminal box they have sunk into the wall, he doesn't quite seem to understand how we can get the speaker mounted on the wall with the cable neatly running into the back, something like this (middle image):

Any thoughts on how to do this appreciated (other than changing builder!).

Loads of products on the market, I'd use something like this:

So the picture above isn't realistic? Surely there's a way that avoids a whole plate next to the speaker? Wasn't quite the look I was going for...

That's a good idea thanks, will see how that goes down with the builder.

Haven't bought the speakers yet but assumed that it would be pretty common for the rear speakers. A visible cable I could live with, it's the extra plate I was particularly keen to avoid.

Just found these:

Really no need for a back box, just bring the cable out of the trunking at the height you want and plaster it in, you'll end up with a cable sticking out of the wall, done it loads of times.

Just make sure you do not drill through your cable when you fit the speaker bracket!

Looks a bit ugly though IMHO.

Not sure what speakers youre using but we just bring the cable directly out from the wall and then through the bracket. Personally I wouldnt want to see a 4" square plastic or stainless box on the wall.

Depends on the speakers and mounts really. The mounts on mine have a little hole in the back that the speaker cable goes through, though there is then an inch or so of cable visible from the mount to the speaker itself. Because of this, I positioned my speakers and then ran the trunking to the point where the holes are for as neat a look as possible.

If I expected to change the speakers at any point, I would have gone with terminals mounted on the wall though.

Friend of mine just buried the cable in the wall with filler and then had it plastered. He then discovered he needed an extra inch or so of cable to reach his speakers so had to pull it all out again.

Could you fit the speaker mounting to the plate as well?

This is looking like a winner thanks.

Haven't bought speakers yet but probably something like this (has to be white and discreet according to her indoors):

Sink some of these into the plasterboard and poke the cable through. It gives you something solid to plaster around. Job done.

^ This is your best option IMO. Personally I wouldn't have the cable just protruding from the wall. Mount a plate with banana connectors as suggested a few inches from your speaker and use a short run of decent speaker wire with quality banana plus and it will look great.

Have you guys taken note of the size of the speakers the OP is intending to fit? A 1 gang plate will be bigger that the speaker!
