When it comes to first cars, most 16/17 years olds like myself are looking at sub £1k boxes with the cheapest insurance we can find, and yet a mate of mine has gone and bought his new car today, his first, a £12.5k Vauxhall Corsa (brand new), its just a bit much for a first car, I probably won't even spend that on a second car!

Edit to add it was brand new

I had no idea they were that expensive. He could buy a nice first car with the depreciation he'll swallow in the first year!

I think anything over a grand or two would be stupid for a new driver as you'd expect them to have a few close calls and car park dings!!
Stupid!
If he doesn't then well done to him!!

I'm 35 and I've never spent that on a car.

Don't worry, he'll be paying it off over 4 years and end up paying about £18k in total.

First car or 50th car, 12k+ on a Corsa seems very odd to me.

They'll be enjoying the finance payments long after the enjoyment of the car has passed. Good luck to them.

996cc Renault 5 for me, 4-speed gearbox and no equipment to speak of. I loved it smile

I asked him how much did it cost for insurance, he replied simply with "Too much"

Not so sure I can agree with you there! I had a 1108cc R5 'Campus' and it never worked, ended up selling it onto some poor fella who spent roughly £500 getting it roadworthy, all for the engine to blow up about a month later. I can give it one plus point, its very comfortable when driving 40mph across a field, thats it! smile

I bought my 528 and insured it all for less than that when I was 21, 24 and still have it.

12 year old BMW>>>>>New Corsa. Unfortunately people see the "11" in the number plate and assume it must be better.

I've got a friend like yours too. He probably lost a quarter of the cars value after one year just because he was too stuborn and would'nt buy a second hand car.

If he can afford it (or more likely his parents can) then good luck to him.

Never understood why people are so jealous of those that have more than them

You're telling me, some of the people I'm at school with (sadly) can be a bunch of snobs. Once of them for their first car got a brand new BMW 1 Series from his parents. Another person there now drives a Ford Ranger Pick Up truck. Its bloody rediculas!

No jealousy here, I just think its sheer idiocy to spend that much on a first car.
