I'm new here- so be gentle!

Just bought a '54 plate 997 C2. Really enjoying driving it. Have noticed a very heavy vibration at 1800 rpm - makes the whole car shake. Have searched and can't find any reference on here.

Get the vibration in neutral or in gear. Its worse when cold. Is this usual?

Its the Intermediate Shaft, specifically the bearing which dries up and wears/breaks up.

Although to be honest, I believe it would be more of a rattle than a vibration?

Best get someone who knows them well to have a look at it for you ASAP. If it's the IMS then it shouldn't be driven (tiny bits of the broken up bearing could be circulating round all your oilways causing all sorts of damage/risk to other components). It could be just an engine mount though?

A vibration that makes the whole car shake certainly isn't something that would be consider "normal operation" imo. How long has it been doing it, and does it have a warranty?

I only took delivery two days ago and it does have a 12 month warranty.

The engine is otherwise completely quiet. No rattles, ticks knocks etc. Just this horrible body shake (like going over a cattle grid) at exactly 1800rpm. Not at 1600rpm and not at 2000rpm or higher.

As others have said this is absolutely NOT normal - get it to a specialist as a matter of the utmost urgency, before any more damage is caused.

I don't think you really need to panic over the IMS yet, sounds as if the dual mass flywheel has failed to me.

Could be a series of things - so you'll get wild speculation on here - get it back to the garage you purchased it from.

Did you switch off the 'shaking-that-arse' button which renault introduced into the porsche range?

Oh, thats alright then confused

I'd rather have an IMS issue under warrenty than a flywheel - they love to quote the wear and tear line on anything like that.

It's not a warranty item if it's only just been purchased, it's a matter of fit for purpose. smile

Not to scare you unnecessarily but if you've got a 12 month warranty I assume you didn't buy it from Porsche (you'd get 2 years), which means whatever warranty you've got might have a claim limit, etc.

I assume this is something that didn't manifest on the test drive?

If it were me I'd get on to the place you bought it from ASAP so they are at least aware that something isn't right.

Yes, the delaer is a small independant.

Wanted to check that its "not normal" before going back and looking like a plonker.

Interestingly, first thing this morning, no vibration when cold, then developed during the journey to work. Am avoiding driving at 1800rpm for now.

Whilst you wait to hear back from the indy - how significant is the vibration?

For example is it enough to shake something off the dashboard (e.g. if you put sunglasses on there) or just enough to make the passenger seat shake very slightly?

Have you got a sports exhaust? Does the vibration sensation appear from the middle of the car (towards the back end of the handbrake) or from the very rear?

OT, but I hope this is normal - mine certainly vibrates at idle, in- or out-of-gear (PDK).

It is enough to make the dash vibrate and rattle and I get a vibro-massage through the seat - I would describe it a like driving over a half height cattle grid.

Other speeds and idle are totally smooth

I would take it back, it doesn't sound great at all.

I'm hoping it's nothing serious but why take a chance?

This could be any number of things, but probably not the IMS as this would have failed quite spectacularly by now, rather than just cause a judder.
My (roughly educated) guesses would be:
One or more coil packs.
Flywheel.
VarioCam failure.
Sticking thottle flap in induction system.
Either way, get it back sooner rather than later, as you'll be exacerbating whatever is going on by continuing to use the car.

Exactly like mine, however it seems the OP has a major vibration if it's like going over a cattle grid.

To the OP I definately wouldn't drive the car further and just get it recovered in case you're doing more damage and that itself could provide a 'get out' for the warranty company.
