I think I found a 535d that I am now considering buying (the choice was between one sold privately and one sold by a BMW dealer). If I decide to buy the one sold privately can I use BMW or any independent company to carry out the checks to make sure that there are no faults and that the car is what the seller says ? If so which independent companies can I use ?

AA/RAC will do them for a fee. If you have a friendly mechanic that you know and/or trust, it might be worth offering beer tokens for an hour of his time one evening - he'll be able to do exactly the same inspection.

Ring BMW warranty with the reg of the private car - if its eligible for warranty Id take out the rolling monthly comprehensive one with no excess for the first couple of months - you will then be covered if anything goes wrong ;-) This would be circa £50-80 pm depending on the year mileage (if under 60k miles).

You can cancel the policy at anytime even if claimed...would cost you less than an RAC inspection which with experience I can say is a total waste of time!
