I'm looking at buying a two or three year old car and I am interested in the differences between a Vantage and a DB9. I currently have a GTR so do not expect to match the performance but I am interested in day to day living. Just for reference I got rid of the GTR because it was hard as hell, cost me over £5k to get it serviced, great when you drove it balls out or on a track but compromised for the other 99% of the time when you just had to get to work. So I was wondering......

Is there much difference in performance between the V8 Vantage and the V12 DB9 (I think it unlikely I will go for a V12 Vantage)?
Are the extra seats in the DB9 worth having or is it just extra weight?
Do they differ much in servicing and running costs?
Has anyone gone for either one and then wished they had chosen the other one?
Can you really run either car as your day to day car or am I going to end up having to take the wife's car a few times every month?

Happy to have any other debate points added though....

We run a V8V and ran it as only car for 3.5 years. In those years we only used a rental car three times (an estate to carry more stuff than the vanrage could).
To my mind the DB9 is rather less practical. I tried to get in the back of a DB9 once. I'm only 5'9", not exactly fat, maybe slightly inflexible and it was not going to happen!
All are special.

You don't see many DB9s in there!

If I was in the market for a new car it would be without doubt the V12V. I've not driven one, but on the grounds that most everyone here reckons it's better than a V8V (which I already adore) then it has to be a winner.

My 2p

did you say 5k to service a GTR!?! Holy cow man!

suggest you use the search facility as this topic has been done to death so many times on this forum..........even better go drive the cars and decide for yourself which you prefer......however if I might be of some assistance

If you drive a Vantage V8 then you might be of the opinion that it is a more sporty car driven by young rutting bucks, the DB9 is a GT car driven by older men who smell of wee.......... If however, you are a DB9 owner then you might be of the view that the Vantage V8 has a silly little engine that you have to rev the balls off to get up a hill

hope this helps

smile

ps The Vantage V8 is also driven by some women with a delicate nature......powerful women drive V12V

Ok, off topic I know, but £5k for a service? What's that about?

My view - TEST DRIVE!!

Oh and have a look at the V12 Vantage if you want an absolute monster of a car - the best car that AML have in regular production...

Thanks for the feedback guys - the statement about the GTR was correct. I owned it for six months and in that time servicing and tyres cost me £7k. With fuel, and the payments for the car, it was costing me an average of £2100 a month - although I will never own anything with a better grin factor! Never thought I was a badge snob, but when I handed over the Ferrari like cheque for the service I did keep looking at the Nissan badge on the front....

I'm guessing the service cost of £5k is based on a few services (a GTR is supposed to be serviced every 6 months, regardless of miles) as opposed to a single service costing £5k.

DB9 - GT car for cruising

Vantage - A sports car

I prefer the Vantage, I like it's compact looks.

I wish it was an accumulation of services - it was just one. It needed the disks replacing as, and I quote, "It looks like it has been on a track day" - I thought that was what I bought it for.....

Are you looking at 4.7 V8V's or 4.3's? The 4.3 is slightly slower than the DB9, but the 4.7 will be very close. The seats in the DB9 are next to useless for anyone over the age of 5. I don't run one as a day to day car, but there are people who do, so I can't see why not as long as it is properly maintained.

I think George just means the rear seats.
Otherwise we've got the pipe smoking, piss smelling, slipper shod demographic of the DB9 owners all wrong!

I rest my case regarding track cars ( on previous posts)......dont touch them with a barge pole or you could end up paying for someone elses fun

Its a shame you didn't do any research - most people use Litchfields who are the DMS of the GTR world. Nissan are a pure rip-off outfit and if I had to use them I wouldn't bother with the GTR either tbh. In my year of ownership the car has cost me approx 1k in 2 services and I recently purchased 4x Bridgestone tyres at 1200gbp per set. If had used Nissan it would have cost twice that.

In any case make sure you go for a V12V in order to have something with at least similar performancesmile

Indeed, they are on the list.

Also be careful of garage queens that haven't had their niggles sorted.

The answer, as usual, appears to lie somewhere in the middle smile

DB9 - A gentleman's express. Effortless pace, class and positively oozing sophistication and knowledge of fine wines, art and literature. The world's finest GT car and winner of GT1 at Le Mans with its racing derivative.

Vantage - Essex boy 'done good' track day car for those who couldn't afford a Ferrari but were far enough up the evolutionary tree to know that a 911 doesn't make you any friends.
