Fairly certain I am going to buy an Oppo 93EU as my first BD player but they want an extra £100 to install MR chip etc. it will do MR for DVD out of the box.

Ignoring that extra cost for a moment is there much out there in terms of films etc that you cannot get in our 'Region'?

I'm really after quality of film transfer as that is why I am going for an Oppo, to get the best visual experience possible. I guess it's possible that other regions have better quality material on offer?

What you lot reckon then?

I have always had MR DVD players. When I went to BD, I bought US and UK players (running the US one off a transformer).

Two years on, I'd say there's not a huge need to have MR BD. My main reasons for doing so were (a) release dates (b) cost. Cost was a factor back in the day of $2:£1. Not so much now. Release dates still vary a bit, but not so much as they used to I think. As for content being available in one region rather than the other, that's not enough of a factor to sway me: again, it used to be the case that the aspect ratios on some films would differ on the US and UK releases, but I think this is less so now. Again, minor cuts (eg the headbutt in the Matrix) aren't enough to sway me.

YMMV.

A Lot of stuff is made into multi region by using a special remote. No hardware changes. Sony are notorious for this

The Oppos need a chip to be MR for BluRays, not a remote trick I'm afraid. However, I deceided it wasn't worth me paying the extra for the MR version of the 93 and it hasn't backfired on me so far: Most discs I've bought have been no region (concert discs) and the rest are rental, so maybe my useage pattern doesn't lend to MR.

It's a great player BTW, quick at loading, source direct if you have an outboard scaler, but decent enough upscaling if you haven't.
