Sourdough from Gail's Bakery, now available at Waitrose in Cobham.

I've just scoffed the whole thing. Lovely, light, lofty crumb, and a delicious 'savouriness' that's like crack cocaine.

Seek this stuff out - else make your own.

(Not sure about the making your own - there is witchcraft at work here, I'm certain of it.)

Bought one of those the other day as I've never had sourdough bread before... I wasn't impressed to be honest. It tasted quite nice, but the outside was absolutely rock hard. Won't be getting it again.

£3! Try £21 for a Shepheards Loaf from our local bakery, Hobbs.

http://shop.hobbshousebakery.co.uk/our-breads/shep...

Yes that is £21 for a single loaf. I have tried it and it is good toasted and keeps for over a week, but £21, please!

Not actually extortionate at all.
21 quids worth gets you nearly a tenners worth of top quality organic ingredients, plus the skilled labour that goes into creating it, and includes delivery to anywhere in the UK.
It's also the size of a pocket battleship and would last a family of four quite some time. smile

Organic flour, approx £1.50 (1.5kg or so, enough for a very large loaf)
Organic yeast, £1.50 (27g)
Organic oil, probably 25p
Organic salt, 10p?
Organic sugar, 10p?

Unless organic water is terribly expensive wink, methinks your calculations are way off.

Guesstimates, I cannot confirm. It's big though, and if quality organic bread that keeps well is your thing and you live nowhere near an outlet, then I guess you'll pay the price.

The loaf would not feed a family of four for very long. One weekend maybe.

Do you honestly think £21 for the Shepheard Loaf is good value?

Consider this.
There is a growing number of people who now entertain at home, and enjoy a quality cheeseboard.

They may not eat out so much now, but they will still pay handsomely for quality cheese.

So why not the bread to go with it?

And if you can't get either locally, you'll buy it over the internet.

Of course, you could always get a supermarket value loaf and some Dairylea, but that ain't quite the same.

So, in answer to your question, yes there are many who think it is good value.

That bread for £21 is 2kg. So approx. 2.5 normal loaves of 800g bread.

That would last 2-3 days in our household at most.

I'm sure it tastes great, but £21 is a pisstake for a loaf of bread. Ingredients bought in bulk are a fiver at most. Again, postage bought in bulk isn't going to be much over £4, meaning £12 labour for a loaf- too much imo.

You may be right, but your figure of £12 should not only cover labour, but overheads and profit.

The Shepheard Loaf has been a bit of marketing ploy for Hobbs. The bakery is a family business run by the Herberts. The latest in that line is Tom who took part in a competition to make the Perfect Loaf, a bit like Hestons series. I think he came second in this national competition and the Shepheard Loaf was the result. It was filmed by the BBC as a documentary.

The bread is too hard for my liking. I honestly believe that some of the artisan stuff at Waitrose is as good for a fraction of the cost. Hobbs best loaf is a Seven Seed which we have most weekends. Great in any situation and about two pound something a loaf which I am happy to pay.
