If you don't learn English, you can't move to the UK
Discussion
Gentlemen, switch on your piss kettles.
Listened to an interview on R4 Today with an Indian woman who has lived here for six years, and now wants her husband to move here. He is unable/unwilling to speak English and therefore he fails the citizenship tests of this and the previous government. Apparently all he needs is "basic conversational English".
After her councillor made a long explanation about how he lived somewhere so remote that obtaining English lessons wasn't an option, the wife then admitted that he had no intention of learning the language when he arrived anyway as he was "too old" to do so.
It struck me that the obvious thing to do would be not to come here if you couldn't cope with the social adaptation, but I imagine that would be considered racist.
Link to Telegraph comment piece purely because that's the first thing Google brought up.
OK, now I feel guilty of bias, so here's the Beeb:

I wonder what will happen to their 6 kids that 'currently' live in India.
My piss was boiling too, and even though she 'could' speak English she chose not too in the interview.. I call b
ks on that.
Also, her husband will get a job (just like that) in the factory she works in, again.. b
ks.
He has no willing to integrate, and I doubt she does either.

I suspect the judges will find in her favour and the husband will be allowed to come to the UK despite not speaking English.
It puzzles me that the judges rarely decide that the "Right to Family Life" could be taken up in India and they could both move there to live together.
If they do, then the floodgates will be opened. It puzzles me that the judges rarely decide that the "Right to Family Life" could be taken up in India and they could both move there to live together.
As someone who is living in a country that I don't have a conversational level of skill in the native language of, I fully support everything that article is saying. Japan does NOT produce its official documents in 40+ languages. Some it produces in 2: Japanese and English. All others are in 1.
You want to live in a country permanently? Learn the language.
As for the human rights arguement: right to a family life - there is nothing stopping her moving back to where her husband lives so no-one is depriving her of a family life apart from herself.

Why do Indians still want to live in the UK?
Isn't their economy booming and our's tanking?
I think there's a huge part of the population which isn't able to work in the growth sectors. Like all migrants they want to move to a country which gives them a better lifestyle I guess.Isn't their economy booming and our's tanking?

So how come it applies to "them" but not to you ?Not to you or all the other Brits living in Spain ? The spanish should send 'em alllllll back.
Oh, I heard this story on R2 yestarday. Don't understand how her lawyer could argue this policy is "racist". If anything, the policy is biased in favour of countries like India, where English is a common second language. Dropping the "R" word into cases like this just devalues genuine cases of racism, IMHO.
She lives in an isolated area? So why not learn before he comes? 125 million English speakers in India, according to the India Times, I'm sure someone could help him...
Oh and "Right to family life"? First, I don't accept we are born with that right. Second, even following the letter of the law, where does it say "right to family life in England"? No-one is stopping her having a family life...
Ok and back to work.

And how did she earn the right to stay?!
How did you earn the right to stay in France? What's so special about you ? Can you speak french ? Do you have an encyclopedic knowledge of French history, of how their government functions ? Do you know any French people or are you just another Brit living in an English ghetto, meeting up with other British Ex-Pats ?So, we're racist but every other country in the world isn't.
f
k her. And f
k her family. Why the f
k should someone who doesn't want to integrate get the good bits of living in the UK.
Integrate, or f
k off. Take the bleeding heart, hand wringing, we-owe-them-a-living lefty
s who make/create/enforce/gain money from representing policy like this with you.
Caveat: I don't want to have sex with her (she's likely ugly as sin) or her family.

Fundamentally, it makes my life easier to be able to ask questions and understand the answers in the native tongue.
The fact that the UK has areas that don't require the use of the native tongue, I consider to be wrong. I also consider it wrong that local authorities and gov't need to waste valuable cash getting forms etc translated in to multiple languages.
