I'm going to start working in London Liverpool Street and due to the extra time travelling each day I won't have time to go to the Gym. Therefore I was thinking of getting a bike to ride from London Marylebone to Liverpool Street as my exercise.

Does anyone cycle this route? Am I mad to do this?

I was thinking of buying a Dahon Mu XL, any thoughts on this bike?

I used to cycle Sidcup to Marylebone which would take me through the west end of Oxford street and up to Baker street, it was fine.

I tried the Euston road version before and I'd say avoid that.

So.. depends on your chosen route but definitely not mad to do it, it'll be more fun than tubes smile

Does it have to be a folding bike?

Once you get used to it, it won't be much exercise compared to a good gym session, but you could do a couple of laps of Regent's Park on the way home. It's always nice seeing giraffes on your commute...

Thanks guys

No it doesn't have to be folding bike but it's easier to carry on the train and keep in the office.

I've got a Mu SL and it's a nice bike. Doesn't look too much different.

Another question would be can you extend the commute so you get off the train earlier and cycle in? If so this would work nicely with getting a reasonable road bike and getting some very good exercise in.

Boris Bike it. £40 for a year, then 30 mins free. For such a short commute it's easy, hassle free.

Beaten to it!

I have just got home off Boris for the 2nd time this week. Great fun and a hell of a work out when compared to a decent bike.

If you're missing the Gym, then try it a few times and I bet you stick to it smile

Also - dead cheap - no locking, carrying etc. You do see plenty heading towards Paddington etc.

And my commute is Fleet St to Warwick Avenue. Rarely, if ever have issues with bike availability etc. If you have an iPhone, just check docking etc en route.

And as said above - £40 p.a. and err..... that's it! beer

Perfectly put. I commute daily on my road bike as I have shower at work and I can leave my bike in the office, so no worry about getting stolen etc.

When I need to goto client meetings during the day I just hop on the Boris bike and away I go. No worries about changing clothes etc. They're perfect for central London. Download an app for iPhone or android and it'll show you where nearest docking station is and availability.
The bikes themselves are hewn from granite and just as heavy :-)

I've recently started using the Boris bikes and rode from Marylebone to Fenchurch street earlier this week. Unless you need to ride to the station from home, I think the Boris bikes are the perfect solution.

Was on the Euston Road for a short time near Kings X and it was awful, so head into the West End and ride through the back streets - much more pleasant and far safer.

When I drive home, I use Euston Road/MArylebone Rd.

On Boris, I 'snaggle' in and out of the back streets - have found some great pubs that I didnt know existed! And I have been doing my commute for 12 years so didnt think there were any more hidden gems smile

I Boris bike from Paddington to Chancery lane. You don't have to register you can pay by card at the machine. its still for if you do the journey in less than 30 mins (I haven't got down below 33 so far frown )

The biggest issue at rush hour is finding a parking slot for the bike.

Marylebone to Liverpool Street isn't all that far anyway, I have walked it a couple of times

Another BBer here. I do Liverpool St to Victoria most days and its quicker than the tube smile

I would certainly try the BB first before buying a bike, that way you will see if you like it. You may also find that the BB works for you, at peak times you can struggle to get/drop off a bike.

I have used the Euston rd a few times and I would give it a wide berth. There are better routes that run parrallel, it will just take time and trial and errorto find them.

Lots of bike lanes to the south of the Euston road

I go from Kings Cross to an office directly on the Euston Road and its very quiet once you get a street or two back
