I am looking to get a peugot 106 strip it down to bare neccasaties weld a bucket seat into it change the windows to a polycarbonate sheet and put a decent harness in. Ime thinking of having it as a project to help me learn abit more about cars ect. Do I need insurance to race at trackdays or not? If I just wanted to turn up with it on a trailer ?

Cheers

If your going to go through all that effort just to drive at a track day why dont you look at doing some sprints or hill climbs? Costs are about the same yet you get much more track to yourself and theres that competitive edge to it.

Its just going to be an over the summer project and I was thinking of picking a 106 up for about 250 I've seen a few in bad body condition but runs perfectly and what woul I need for hill sprints on the car as ime not the most mechanical personb when it comes to cars.

Not a bad plan... my advice would be to pick a make/model/engine which can be used in a championship such as the 750 motor club so that there is a possibility to sell the car when you're done with it, or even if you feel like competing yourself? a 106 Quicksilver (1.4 16v) or a 1.6 8v could be competetive in 750mc stock hatch.
The market for track prepped cars is very limited so ensure the car will still be useful to you/someone after you've done all the prep.

Okay, my bad. My point is OP needs to chose something which will be useful long term... Stock hatch is open to any hatches with up to "1.6l 8v engines or 1.4 16v engines" and you just need control tyres and safety features... other than that the cars are largely standard.

If you dont plan to drive it on the road, what about a Clio 1.8 16v? 137bhp IIRC, and handle like a rollerskate. I loved mine, and they can be found for around the 1k mark now. (I know, I was looking to get one for exactly the same reason!)

That Panda 100hp is no slouch mate, Evo rated it as a decent drivers car. You could be sat in something a lot less accommodating! Honestly, those Clios handle well out of the box, quick for what they are, and you will have the bonus of not having to insure it for road use. Have you thought of a Saxo VTS as well, probably a bit easier to get parts for now. Same package though.
