Which E60 BMW tourer

I`m looking to buy a E60 5 series tourer preferably a diesel, which is the best all round engine size to look for? i don`t want a real gas guzzler so not going for the bigger engined cars, i was thinking perhaps the 520 or the 525 i`m looking more for economy and a bit of performance any recommendations or drawbacks with either of them?

My wife has a 525d 05 plate

Overall good car- on fast motorway runs only manages early 30's mpg.... Drive at 75 and minimise kick down (hers is an auto) and you can squeeze out early to mid 40's

I had a Volvo s60 for a couple of months (man) and on like for like conditions it would better the 525d by at least 33% mpg......

I think the later 525d may be better on fuel
