So tell me about Sawbridgeworth & surrounds
Discussion
Hello Herts people
I'm trespassing from the Essex forum to ask about the nice places you live.
I'm currently looking for a house and the shortlist includes places in Sawbridgeworth, and Churchgate Street.
We like good pubs & restaurants, the quiet life and a good country walk/run, as well as needing transport into the city, and, of course, good driving roads.
I've checked out the last bit and it gets a big + :-)
So what can you tell me ?

There are some lovely villages around this area, and Sawbo is a nice little place - in fact I'm off there to Wiggies this morning to get my hair cut..
Only problem is Sawbo has a Budgens, but then you're 10 mins from Stortford and, heavens forbid, Harlow, if you need to shop. Some good pubs and restaurants in Sawbo, more than you would imagine for somewhere that size. We're off to The Straw Hat for dinner tonight, which is very, very nice, if a touch pricey. The Goose Fat & Garlic is good too...
Eastwards from Sawbo you have Hatfield Heath, Hatfield Broad Oak and Matching Green - all lovely but the only thing you have to be cognizant of is the Stansted flight path, which while inconsistent can get a tad noisy over that way.
To the West of Sawbo you also have some lovely villages, I'm in Much Hadham, which I love, but you also have Allens Green, Green Tye, Widford, Hunsdon and High Wych, all of which are very pleasant.
I could wax lyrical about the local pubs for both drinking and eating, and there are some superb driving roads round here too!
PM me if you want any more 'local' info....

This part of East Herts is consistently voted one of the top 5 places in the UK to live and there is a good reason why. I've lived all over the UK and the world, and never been happier than I am here.
If you have the time, do take a look over this way - Much Hadham in particular is a good place to live if you like walking, pubs (The Bull is brilliant), driving, and you can be in central London easily within an hour door to door via Harlow/Stortford on the Stansted Express.
ETA It's Andy BTW!

Just seen this and, a month late, thought I'd also give Sawbo the thumbs up.
Grew up here, and moved back after being in London, Germany, and then Bishops Stortford. Some nice restaurants (the two mentioned + the Star of India and Peking Palace for Indian and Chinese), and the train service isn't bad, though not as good as from Harlow or Stortford (Stansted Express stops at each every 30mins all day long).
Churchgate St is lovely too and where my family are all from (13 kids in the last generation so my family have owned more or less the entire street at one time or another, and still a few living there). You do pay a big premium for it though, and you can't walk, that easily, to any stations, which can be a pain.
I'm in the white 08 Cayman S in Sawbo if either of you gents happen to pass by, and say hello to Jim in Wiggies for me

Will look out for you, although won't be for a while as I'm sitting (now 6.41pm here) in Turkey right now in 32 degree heat with a very cold Efes
in my hand and my feet in the pool, which I think is a tad better than you're getting back in the UK (spoke to my mate this morning and he said the weather is pants).... sorry about that!
Anyway, where your family does/did live in Sawbo is truly lovely, and also welcome back to Sawbo!
Will certainly look out for you, I'm either in an '11 Purple/black 370 Roadster or the wife's silly-plated black Pathfinder or now and then a '07 silver/red Caterham or a Vauxhall Van....
Wave if you see me!

I'll keep an eye for you - here and in Turkey as we're about to book a last minute trip out there to escape this non-summer!
Just one word of caution, I've just edited the above post to make my location less obvious - my Cayman was, seemingly, broken into (there's a slim chance I left it open) last Wednesday night. Fortunately no damage (hence thinking it was left open), and only my sunglasses got nicked, but still... More details in the Porsche forum.
Edited to add, would also be curious to hear which roads you usually drive? I'm regularly hooning up past the old airfield near Allen's Green, or going sideways on Stortford bypass's roundabouts. Or even the entrance to Tesco at Bishops Park - it's like a skid pan on that right hander by the petrol station

I edited mine too, and apologies for the late response, been on the boat yesterday/today so no internet access. Sorry to hear about the break-in, you just don't hear about that kind of stuff round here, really surprising.
Hooning roads are Stortford/Hadham/Ware B1006 (bad surface in places but some really great corners), the road right (from BS direction) at the Little Hadham lights towards Albury - some superb corners and two or three with epic sight-lines, but there is one with a difficult camber whicth can catch you, and the road out of Stortford to Hatfield Broad Oak via Hatfield Heath. And there is of course the A507 over to Baldock from Buntingford, can be a lot of fun.
