Forgive me if this has already been answered.

The Traffic Police that sit on the edges of motorways sat in their car with a camera device to their eyes - what are they doing?

Are they:
1. recording speeders to send tickets to later or
2. watching for a speeder to trap, set off and stop??

Thanks for your help..

We are using a Laser, looking for someone travelling at excess speed to stop and dish out a ticket to.
Or if its sunny we`re just catching some rays.....

and the chances of a Policeman seeing some dangerous driving while measuring speeds is a far better option than a camera! I think you need to figure out what you want road-safety wise, that post suggests you don't want Policemen patrolling...

I heard that you have to formulate an opinion that car xxx is travelling at a dangerous speed, the laser is there to validate that opinion. Is that correct? If thats the case, surely you can't stand and measure car's speed?

My colleagues and I don`t spend all day sitting in a car dishing out tickets, its just a very small percentage of out time and to be honest you really have to be taking the p*$! to get a ticket.
Due to the lack of Traffic patrol officers we spend most our day travelling from RTA to another, hence when we do nick someone for speed, it`s usually 20-30 mph over the posted limit. I don`t have time for much else.
The Laser/Pilot confirms our opinion that the vehicle is speeding, to answer a query.
I also try to deal with as many WDC candidates as possible offering driver improvement schemes as opposed to Court..

My cousin (when he was doing this kind of policing) compared himself to a basking shark! And, when I first settled over here, described his job once to me as "larking about in side streets!" He also says he could write a best-seller on numpty behaviour, the excuses he has been given for "misbehaviour"....

However, the ones on the M60 (when they are there ) laser anything that moves! Trouble is road there rarely moves above 25mph when they are there! But then they are on the police observation post near a Manchester crime hot spot - so perhaps they are really looking out for a Mr Big of Scrote Suburb.

However - would rather see these guys out and about than the scams. Would not begrudge my tax money being spent on useful services. Definitely begrudge my taxes being wasted on Noo Labia jobs for Tone's crones! (And the other daft politically correct projects - which serve no purpose other than harrass the law-abiding hardworkers in this country! )

Thanks for your replies.

So the hand held type of camera that I saw doesn't record speeders for the later ticket to drop on the door mat??

No handheld cameras are used to issue tickets/NIPs at a later date. The only Lasers used for this purpose are mounted on tripods inside Camera vans. They are far to heavy to be held by hand as they have a monitor attached to them.

Me 2. I've been worried for over a week now about a possible ticket. (The usual - Dry, Dual Carriageway, Crusing at between 8.5-9.0units) I thought i had seen him early enough to slow down but you never know.
