Oh Dear! What would cause this?
Discussion
Ouch!,
It looks like oil starvation!
Give me the details.
What type of engine?
What did you do when this happen, racing?
Is this engine new or old?
How much oil pressure do you have when cold and when warm?
Do you have oil cooler?
What type of oil did you use? Syntetic oil or mineral?
What oil visco do you use?
I´ve seen this a couple of times before.
It looks exactly the same.

Pah thats nothing.
Heres my bearings and crank after running without an oil pump for a few miles.
I often have the odd washer left over when working on an engine but forgetting the oil pump is just plain careless.Heres my bearings and crank after running without an oil pump for a few miles.

I missed a spacer behind the main pulley which worked its way forward drawing the oil pump drive gear out.
I made it about 35 miles on the cars maiden journey after a very long and expensive rebuild

Oooops... What do you think caused all this.... I could only guess a severe lack of lubrication?

IMHO that has been caused by the journal getting too hot, the way the caps have discoloured proves this, i would say either oil too thick trying to get to the bearings or maybe oil surge at some time to pick a bearing upMain Caps:

Still some basic answers needed.
What oil was used, what oil pressure ? Was it driven with poor oil pressure ? What sort of usage has it seen ?
But often as the title suggests, that sort of damage is caused, rather than just happens.
I mostly work on Subarus, and big ends are seen as a common problem. But in 90+% of cases it's simply down to either lack of maintenance, or just plain idiot maintenance. Or those combined with pure owner abuse.
Half the engines I see with damaged big ends, are simply down to the owner never checking the bloody oil levels then abusing it with no oil in it. Then they blame everyone else etc
