Think about getting a Tuscan, 2005 onwards...2 questions....33k miles - will it need engine work as it is a later model, and...seen one advertised on St Albans...but it is listed as a 3.6L...I thought all mkII were 4.0+?
Any help much appreciated
Its early ones that are all 4.0l. Not sure about very late ones.Any help much appreciated
You can never be sure that it wont need engine work, some say later ones are better, but quite a few have needed rebuilds, its your £7k gamble (approx cost of a rebuild)
Let's not scare the poor fellow away
I sat in the wings for over a year because I was worried about the rebuild issue.
Succumb last week and picked up a 2004 and glad I did.
7k is worst case, when looking around I saw a lot of cars with rebuilds and the average cost was between 2-4k
Make sure any one you go for has been recently checked and don't go thrashing it from cold;)

Would like to know who does rebuilds for 2-4k?

I encourage people to buy a Tuscan, but it has to be eyes open. I certainly haven't see a decent rebuild with a warranty for £4k. Partial rebuilds yes, but IMO they only address part of the potential problem. When I was buying I looked at a car that was described as having a rebuild, i finally spoke to the well known and respected specialist that did it. He advised me that he had been instructed to only do a couple of finger followers and one cam shaft. That is not a rebuild and he said in his mind there was no doubt that the engine would need more work but the owner didn't want to pay for it. That was a 2003 car and looked immaculate in every respect.
The engine is a known weak point that would appear to be sorted with a decent rebuild (remember some earlier rebuilds have had to be done again). So a car without a re-build must be a gamble.
That is fine if the OP is prepared to take the risk. He may get a car that never needs a rebuild.
The best bet with an un rebuilt engine is to get TVR Power to look it over and buy their guarantee. The downside is that you have to take it to them for servicing, so if you are not local that can be a pain.
They are fantastic cars and if you fancy one, get one, just go in to it eyes open and do what you need to do to give yourself peace of mind (that varies from person to person, for some it will be a full rebuild and warranty for others it will be their own inspection)

Get it inspected if your not sure.Any help much appreciated
I bought a Mk1 without inspection and had to have a rebuild staright away.
I bought a Mk2 Tuscan (2006) again without inspection as I just loved the car (or because I'm stupid).
Obviously test drove it and looked at it myself this time round.
I was told before hand that the post 2004 engines are better and, having driven several times to Germany and preparing for my third trip to Spain, am convinced they are.
Engines just had a service and given a clean bill of health.
Yes some Mk2 Tuscans are 3.6
The only cost outside servicing I've had has been the usual geometry set up and change of shocks.
Good luck.
Tony.

I hope all goes well for you in a search for what is a truly awesome vehicle. Take your time, you will know "the one" when you see it.Any help much appreciated
A couple grand set aside just in case is the best bet. Either way the fun and smile these cars put on your face are worth it!
Good luck
To OP and all other readers, I drive a 2000 Mk1 with 25K miles that has NEVER had a rebuild yet. I always leave it warm up properly (also gearbox and diff oil which takes about 20 Miles) and use it like it is meant to be used. I am always surprised about what it punches above 6K RPM.
The thing is that I just spent another 3K Euro since the last 2k Miles to adjust everything, valves, throttle bodies and so on. (also fitted Nitrons!!!! What a dream, should have done it imediately!!!!)
What i want to say, if properly maintained and warmed up even the first Mk1's (with all the bad, weak parts) can endure a fair share of (ab;-)use.
I drive a 997 C4s cabrio for daily use and although it impresses me every time on engineering, pefection, and quality of the build and drive it never makes me scared or grinning like a stupid 7 year old school boy. The (de-catted) Tuscan now even bangs with the upshift!!!
It squeezes your balls and if you are not giving it what it wants it bites your head of. I love it.
Just take the plunge and enjoy it.

It is exactly the opposite...There were a few (less than 10)Early (2005) 3.6 MK2s... A few show on the register here http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0...You can never be sure that it wont need engine work, some say later ones are better, but quite a few have needed rebuilds, its your £7k gamble (approx cost of a rebuild)
