The only test drive they might do is if it has a fancy diff and can't do a brake test on the rollers. Then they have to take it up the road to use the brakes and see if they work. But I can't see that applying to an MX5.
To be honest I'm more worried about my other car than the MX5. It's never failed it's MOT. (Ok it failed on a blown sidelight which was fitted and tested right away).

I know your pain. The worst is way they take it for the test drive.
It's like sending your missus to the lady-doctor.
M.O.T does not include a test drive. It's like sending your missus to the lady-doctor.

)We done mine on the rollers, was fine.. I doubt many garages know the MX5 has a LSD.

If your vehicle has a diff or 4wd it can't be brake tested on the rollers, so they do have to do a road test with a brake-ometer thing (Not correct name

I don't think my MX-5 has the LSD.

is it safe to MOT a car with an LSD on rollers? Mine has a working LSD and I'd like to keep it that way.
You can test an slippy diff on the rollers as you are rotating both wheels on the axle together. If its a 4x4, you can do that on the rollers too, provided you put the transfer box into neutral and make sure the centre difflock isn't engaged. I've never presented a 4x4 vehicle with a viscous centre coupling, but I do know if there is any doubt they will test the brakes on the road, using a G meter,
But they are within their rights to take the car for a test drive, should the MOT tester feel its necessary for any reason.

And I wonder which cars they "feel" need a test drive?

Sometimes they might decide they want to road test the brakes, or on some vehicles the ABS light doesn't go out until the speed goes above a few mph (eg Disco 1), in which case the tester might drive a few hundred yard just to confirm the light goes out, and stays out.

Well all sorted! After a weekend of grazed knuckles and blue air the suspension was swapped over then had the sills all welded today and the test is re-booked for wednesday afternoon! Be glad to have it back on the road, as much as I enjoy the Jag I do miss getting the roof down and having a blast

Well, for instance they might see something which makes them suspect the car won't run in a straight line. Or they might decide the cat needs warming up, if its just out of limits on emissions.
I always make sure my car is, well, "properly" warmed up before going for the MOT. Firm believer that a good Italian tune-up works wonders.Gassing Station | Mazda MX5/Roadster/Miata | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff

mine doesn't either.
