Is it a legal requirement for a bike to have one on the front? I can't seem to find a definitive answer on line. The reason I ask as it making the front of the bike look a bit ste but I don't know if I will ever get the time in the near future to pass my full test, and as I plan on just riding the 125 for another 3 years can't see much point other than I will be able to ditch the plates!

A friend of a friend just got nicked in Wales for no front L Plate. He had a rear one on. Three points and a £60.00 fine.

Just display the plates. Everyone knows you're on a 125 anyway, so you might as well. If you're planning on keeping it for 3 years you'll need to re-do your CBT anyway.

L plates just make you a target. I was subject to some shocking overtakes on Ls. As soon as they came off it was back to the normal dodgy ones.

Its three points and a £60 fine for EACH L plate not displayed. This includes cut down L plates and the like.

I am not bothered about people knowing I have a 125. Its just my transport to the station. Like others have said, people think you are 17 and have no idea and do silly things, not that you have held a car licence for 18 years. CBT is half a day, bike test is more like a week and it a lot of time for riding a 125.

125's usually do have L plates, so when I see a 125 without them I tend to assume that they're fallen off or that the rider's a bit vain, like you. wink

I'd put them both on - it's too obvious a thing for the police to stop you for and 3 points on your licence is a bit of a blow!

Anyway, it's the law:

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Hig...

[Laws MV(DL)R reg 16 & RTA 1988 sect 87]

Vehicles. Any vehicle driven by a learner MUST display red L plates. In Wales, either red D plates, red L plates, or both, can be used. Plates MUST conform to legal specifications and MUST be clearly visible to others from in front of the vehicle and from behind. Plates should be removed or covered when not being driven by a learner (except on driving school vehicles).

Bike test is only a couple of hours.
It only becomes days or a week if you book a training course.
