Is it a legal requirement for a bike to have one on the front? I can't seem to find a definitive answer on line. The reason I ask as it making the front of the bike look a bit s

Its just my transport to the station. Like others have said, people think you are 17 and have no idea and do silly things, not that you have held a car licence for 18 years. CBT is half a day, bike test is more like a week and it a lot of time for riding a 125.
125's usually do have L plates, so when I see a 125 without them I tend to assume that they're fallen off or that the rider's a bit vain, like you.
I'd put them both on - it's too obvious a thing for the police to stop you for and 3 points on your licence is a bit of a blow!
Anyway, it's the law:

[Laws MV(DL)R reg 16 & RTA 1988 sect 87]
Vehicles. Any vehicle driven by a learner MUST display red L plates. In Wales, either red D plates, red L plates, or both, can be used. Plates MUST conform to legal specifications and MUST be clearly visible to others from in front of the vehicle and from behind. Plates should be removed or covered when not being driven by a learner (except on driving school vehicles).
