Perfect demonstration on why to keep an eye on what's happening behind you (not just in front) when coming up to stationary traffic on the road. Give yourself space to escape if you see someone coming in to fast, and slightly aim the car off the road, so if someone does come into the back of you then it pushes you off the road rather than into what is effectively a car crusher.

Eurgh, that makes me cringe just watching it. I always keep an eye on lorry's behind me when in any slow moving traffic on a motorway.

I would like to hear what the "put the handbrake and your auto into P while stationary, cause you're burning me eyez" cry baby possee has to say about this. Which option is going to be quicker when you spot a runaway lorry in your rear view mirror.
Option 1: depress brake, drop the handbrake (sometimes combined with lift your armrest, move your cup of coffee etc), throw D, release brake, accelerate.
Or Option 2: release brake and GTFO (ie accelerate).

Because the full version of put the handbrake on is:-
"Wait for the situation to stabilise & be static before putting the handbrake on, THEN release the footbrake" I do this for as far as I can see, which precluding an HGV behind will be 10-15 cars or so.
But that assumes the mongs that dazzle are capable of using a mirror anyway!

tbh, if your car is stationary, and there is anything behind you moving at more than jogging pace, you have already failed in terms of observation and positioning imo.

monthefish makes a very good point about the immovable object. That barrier was the equivalent of a bridge support or roadside rock outcrop, but it IS possible and therefore must be coped with. I try to leave enough space in front of my car when I pull up to see clear tarmac ahead of mine and behind what's ahead to give an option to pull off to the side or at least to lessen the severity of a rear shunt. The earlier advice regarding mirror watching and brake release readiness (hand or foot) is sound as well. I have had to roll across a stop line at lights on red once to save myself from being hit from behind by a lorry with steam coming off its locked tyres on a wet North Circular Road. He stopped where my car had been...

Why? If the traffic has ground to a halt ahead I'd rather have the hard shoulder (or grass bank) available as an escape route. Where are you going in L2?

That's awful! On my commute to work I come off the M1 at J33 which is pretty much always queued up. I always sit in the traffic with a big space between me and the car in front watching my mirror in case some dumbwit is not paying attention and ensure I can escape down the hard shoulder if that should happen.

Last night on Traffic Cops there was a lorry which had ploughed through the central reservation barriers and straight into the opposite traffic flow.

Utterly terrifying to think you could just be pootling along and then bam...you're dead.

I had a pretty bad crash last week where a woman in a fully laden Mondeo failed to stop at a give way and just sped straight out from a minor road (at about 40mph) to my right and obliterated the Mrs' MINI. I didn't even see her coming, despite being a pretty aware driver.

We'll be replacing the small car with a tank of some description. I'm selfish and want to protect her from other people's mistakes. I keep thinking "if it'd have been a 4x4 that hit us, we'd have been in trouble". If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Wouldn't help with a lorry though

I assumed from the shape of their immovable barrier they were trying to simulate the cars being rammed into the back of a fully loaded lorry.
