1996 900 mile E320 estate Sportline

I have been offered a 900 mile 124 E320 estate registered 1996 which is being sold as part of probate, the owner was friends of my parents but died back in 1996 it then passed to his wife and has been unused since apart from servicing, I was lucky enough to buy a E320 Cabriolet from the lady last year as she was giving up driving, she has since died and the Estate is now for sale, it was fully loaded when new and remains unmarked, the solicitor has said a figure of 10k, the car is as new but needs tyres, as these have never been changed, I don't really have need for an estate but feel at that price it's a good buy and might be worth putting into storage for long term investment. I wondered what people thought where the value of these cars would go long term with this sort of mileage and condition.

I think if the car has been stored correctly and is in 'like new' condition in a sensible colour and with a few nice optional extras then £10k is a realistic figure for it.

I can think of many worse ways of spending £10k

There is probably a limit on estate values because--unlike coupés and cabriolets and roadsters--they are bought for use rather than for show. That said, there have been plenty of s123s on the market at north of 12k and that is with mileages in the 20,000s. If it were a diesel it would probably be worth at least £15k. What is the specification, in particular the colour and trim? If it is smoke silver you have a buyer!

900 miles? cost per mile does not bear thinking about!
1996 also makes this one of the last ones and i think a E320 is one of the rarer estates- as other smaller engines more common

Price is a bit steep but not too far off - they will never be worth mega money. It will need some money spent to recommision or to store depending on what you wish to do with it so that needs to be budgeted in.

Worth noting that one of the rarest RHD estates- the E36-of which afaik 7 built/sold in UK does not go for crazy money -although i still feelthe E36 is undervalued and it's investment potential will yield in the future.

Also bear in mind that , despite not being used , the engine wiring loom may have degraded over time - not a vast expense in the scheme of things , but should be carefully examined .

A good , mint , estate car will be the rarest and most sought after variant of the series , since most estates are used as workhorses - this has certainly proved true of W123 with mint examples of estates being more valuable and collectable than coupes or saloons .

It is likely to be quite a good investment , if you can keep it for ten years or longer .

The collection of E36s is for sale at Avantgarde at the moment, with the exception of the station wagon. It was hawked around about two years ago as well but presumably didn't sell or survived as a collection.

The Hairpin Company sold a dark blue metallic (Azurite, I think, but may have been Nautic) E36 station wagon about two or three years ago. I don't know whether that is another of the seven.

The black metallic car has been for sale for a while.

Back to the 900 mile 320 TE: does anyone have any further information about its specification? A chassis number would be useful.

In germany good clean low milage W124 estates are starting to creep above the €12k barrier,get someone like John Haynes (West Sussex based)to give the car a thorough going over.An invoice from him certainly counts for alot.In general spec counts for alot towards a desirable car. Does it have a 5speed auto box,this being a very late w124 I would expect it to have one.Some poeple don't like the 5speed because of it's more complex nature ,so it needs to well checked over.

Also for sale were a 1979 450 SEL 6.9 one owner 26000 miles and a 1995 Range Rover LSE again one owner 6200 miles, I,ve also bought these as well, but haven't told the wife yet!

Wow, that is pretty much a total specification in perfect colours, silver and black with climate and heated orthopaedic seats.

211 is Automatic Anti-Slip Differential, a fancy electronic Limited Slip Differential and a precursor or alternative or supplement to traction control.

551 is Anti-Theft Warning System.

593 appears to be heat-insulating glass, all-round, heated rear window pane (single sheet safety glass), band filter.

The 6.9 sounds exciting, too.
