Looking for Dad's old TR4
Discussion
I have tried in vain (DVLA, TR Register etc) to try to find my late father's Triumph TR4. Registration 9067 RW. Think its a 1962 car and is blue. Its SORNd so still exists. Any help gratefully received
Photo shows my mum sat on the bonnet in Cardiff. Both my folks passed young so would love to find this motor.

What a Lovely photo.......Lovely TR4 as well and the plate is my Initials !!
And sorry to hear that both your parents died young. My Dad died at only 41 and i have been trying to trace his cars, but only found one E Type so far out of 3 he owned.
Amazeing that this one has survived, the Solid Axle TR4 is far better than the 4A with that awfull IRS Lash up.
Really feel for you and hope you can find it. Ex Family cars, have an Incredible pull about them. I have had many TR6s and was going to sugest the TR Register.
Have you tried the TR Drivers Club ? If its still going .
Pm me.

Thanks all. I tried the DVLA begging route but they wouldnt pass on my letter. Am hoping that posts such as this may jog someones memory. I am sure the car is sat in someones garage waiting restoration - just hope i can track it down.
How many times did you try? You may have just ended up with a grumpy bugger in Swansea; it might be worth trying again?Well, someone loves it because a quick check on the DVLA site shows the following:-
Date of Liability 01 06 2012
Date of First Registration 21 03 1962
Year of Manufacture 1962
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 2138CC
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type Petrol
Export Marker Not Applicable
Vehicle Status SORN Not Due
Vehicle Colour BLUE
So it's taxed until June 2012 and not mouldering away.

No, if YOU bother to look, it says SORN not due - which I take to mean it is SORN'd at the moment and not taxed.
It would say licence not due if it was taxed ...
That DVLA site is a bit hard to understand if the car is SORN or if someone has a tax disc but I think MikeyT is right on this.It would say licence not due if it was taxed ...
I bothered to look on www.askmid.com and it is not on there, so that seems to back up that it is not on the road. My money is that it is in bits in someone's garage getting restored slowly.
Can you submit a form to the DVLA to find out the registered keeper if you spin a yarn that the car is parked in your drive and you need to trace the owner, or something along those lines, and pay a fee?? I read that on here I think; certainly private companies can get this info to enforce parking tickets and the DVLA just love the income right?
I humbly apologise, but it is confusing isn't it? I took the time to copy out what the computer says for one of my cars that IS on the road, and here's how it reads:-
The enquiry is complete
The vehicle details for 306 CYN are:
Date of Liability 01 07 2012
Date of First Registration 13 10 1961
Year of Manufacture 1961
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 3781CC
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type Petrol
Export Marker Not Applicable
Vehicle Status Licence Not Due
Vehicle Colour BLUE
Vehicle Type Approval
So, no mention of a SORN in sight if it is on the road. That would seem to be the simple way of telling the difference - or is it?

Easily missed lowdrag, no problem. But that is THE only way to tell I think. Thelicence due date remains whether it is SORN'd or not I think from memory.
If it says:
Vehicle Status Licence Not Due
... I understand it to be on the road and taxed (free or not)
... but if it says:
Vehicle Status SORN Not Due
I understand that it to be SORN'd ...

I know that you used to be able to submit a fee and request the previous owners of a car you had bought to be able to trace its history - I did just that with a Triumph Stag I bought in the mid 80s - it unearthed a catalogue of horrors! But whether you can do that and find the current owner of a car you don't own I have no idea, but I would guess not.

My understanding is just that and so the car is SORNd, hopefully being restored. I will try the DVLA again...have tried all the suggested routes already and all I get back is apologetic letters. I have sent them money, told them my life story etc. and all to no avail. I have rung around various TR restoration places, sent letters to TR World etc....no result as yet.
Keep your eyes peeled guys - I will offer a small token of thanks to anyone that manages to trace the car for me.

Nope, if you dont own the car, they wont give you the info.If it says:

Good luck with your search OP.
I can imagine how important it is to you to find the car.
I only additional advice I would give is to go to your local DVLA office.
I know from personal experience that they are a hundred times more helpful in person than on the phone and are a lot more likely to hand out advise and tips etc.
Once again, Good Luck!
