Advice needed, off to see Tamora tomorrow
Discussion
Hi all,
this is my first post on here so hello to you all.
I am off for a four hour journey tomorrow to go and see a Tamora 2002 with 36k on the clock. I have never owned a TVR before so any advice much appreciated. It is the one on the classifieds here from Performance Cars.
Let me know what you think please as any help will come in handy.
Thanks in advance and I am sure I will be hassling you all for tips.

condition, condition , condition......hopefully a stack full of receipts and service history, as its an early model, pre 2003-4 check for engine rebuild info if any, regular service intervals.
if this is the first one to view, be prepared to walk away and find another, try not to let your heart rule your head........a very difficult thing to do with a tvr

Suspect he means:
No rebuild - consider the potential cost of having to have engine re-built at some point in future (£5k ish)
Re-build been done - who did it, under warranty? Piece of mind its been done, as long as done well.
Be prepared to look at a few. Not that many out there, but be patient.

We had our Tamora inspected by Rob Ingleby (Find A Sportscar) a few weeks ago.
We had been to see the car, went through the paperwork, had a drive etc and were pretty sure of the car. But we wanted an independent inspection to be sure of it. For sake of £200 its worth it.

I've used Rob for a few prospective TVR purchases. We had been to see the car, went through the paperwork, had a drive etc and were pretty sure of the car. But we wanted an independent inspection to be sure of it. For sake of £200 its worth it.
On one occasion avoided me buying a bit of a pup.
..........an independent inspection also balances the head vs heart issues that inevitably arise..!
Best of luck

one question I have that I haven't been able to find on line is how much is the tax for a 2002 51 plate Tamora for 12 months. Just to sort the budget out correctly. Thanks!
My 2005 Tam is £165 I think (due next month, so been a while...). Apparently due to low number of manufactured cars, TVRs have managed to be dropped into a category that avoids the larger tax bracket. If the road tax is coming into your budget calcs, think hard about buying one of these. No disrespect intended (dont know your personal circumstances), but with the normal running costs of these types of cars, the difference between £165 or say £300 is potentially the least of your potential outlay. Allow £1,000 a year for basic servicing with no repairs, and maybe another £1000 in savings for other 'stuff' - new clutch could be £8/900 for example.
Go in with your eyes wide open.

Your question regarding engine rebuilds suggests you don't know the history of the Speed 6 engine, sorry if i'm wrong, but before you buy, read through PH to find out the relevance of this question, i'm not being obtuse, i'm just a bit tired
to go through the whole history thing. Also, get the car inspected by a speciliast on a lift, not just jacked up on a driveway!

When you say look for rebuild do you mean this is good or bad. Have you looked at the car? If so what do you think?
sounds like you are very new to TVRs Early speed six engines can be fragile so a rebuild can be seen as an asset , warming the engine up properly is important and you have no way of knowing how the car has been treated if your buying from a dealer . That being said its a lot of car for the money go and look but walk away and find a few more to look at or better still find a local owner to show you round their car .Echo the above comments. It may be worth reading through the threads in the Speed 6 forum to give you an idea.
I'd say an inspection is essential once you've found one you like. Ideally get it checked out by a TVR specialist on the ramps in their garage. They should be able to tell you whether it's a good one or not.

I went to see this car and I have to say that IMO it's in very good shape, the chassis in particular looked very clean. The main reason why I didn't go for it was because I wasn't overly impressed with the colour combo. Although it turned out to be nicer than the pictures showed it just didn't get me excited.
I can also recommend PeformanceCars as I brought my Fiat Coupe from them 6 years ago. I've been in there a few times since to talk to Alistair about a number of cars and he's always had the time to talk and show me round some of the cars I'm interested in. I'm sure if you phone and ask before you arrive they might be able to make arrangement (for a small fee perhaps) to have it lifted on the ramp in a local garage. (from memory they use a firm behind there facility)

Thanks for the advice. With regards to asking about the tax I am just making sure I get all the costs sorted.
Cheers
Something that may be of help to you is this post I made a few days ago detailing my costs over the last 2 1/2 years and 16000 miles in my T350. As the 350 and Tam are essentially the same car it should at least give you an idea of potential costs, some spend a lot less, others a LOT more.Cheers

OP - take notice of this post! Make your own mind up by all means but please do read it. About half way down a post by Uncle fester sums it up pretty well.Just remember it's easy to inspect a good car and pass it off as good, where you earn your salt is spotting the duds and BTW - A S6 engine cannot be passed off as good in a 1/2 hour kerbside inspection.
