A mates mother has a large supply of Bramley apples, and he has a 10 tonne hydraulic press which I sure could be easily adapted for the job. Anyone got any experience of cider making? Is it much hassle?

From having a read around the web it seems the basic process is:

Pulp apples
Press apples
Probably need to add sugar if using Bramleys?
Add yeast
Leave a couple of days
Decant to demijohns with airlocks
Leave a cou0ple of weeks
Decant to bottles, possibly with a bit of sugar if you want some fizz

Does that seem about right?

Cider is made from cider apples like Dabinett and Michelin.

There was a thread about this a couple of months ago IIRC.

Cheers, looks like 1/3 cooking apples is about the maximum, I'll stick with using them for pies and crumbles

If you want to experiment before getting into pressing apples search for the recipe for turbo cider. Dead easy and you can make small batches using tea, honey and whatever else takes your fancy.

Keeping my eyes on a few wild trees for scratting and pressing later in the year.
