have just been speaking to thames valley police regarding the legalities of using a speed detector unit on my dashboard. the question i asked was are the detector units that have laser diffusors (not scramblers) legal?

answer? dunno. the copper i spoke to asked his sergeant who used to be a traffic policeman and he didn't know either.

my question: so who would know?

answer: dunno - you might want to try dept of transport.

useless. surely they are either legal or illegal.

the comment 'you shouldn't speed in the first place' which they threw at me is not acceptable either - as being a human being (apologies for it) i will be prone to speeding from time to time.

what can you do?

Get a response from them in writing. Send a letter with your questions and then they'll have to respond in writing. Interesting to see what their answers will be if they have to put it in black & white

I think you should let sleeping dogs lie. There is no clear interpretation of the law as far as laser jammers are concerned. Why provoke a response which is unlikely to be favourable.

Best policy is to use one with caution, believing it to be illegal. That way you can't end up disappointed.
