Chatting over my next car (this isn't a what car, just the context), I was discussing a few of the options I have available, which turned into a mini debate over what the most 'sensible' approach is to buying a car.

If you're buying a newer car (irrespective of performance/tier) and wish to be mindful about the 24-36month cost of the vehicle, is it better to:

Buy something newer from a lesser marque, which is in warranty
So you buy a lesser marque vehicle, which you know will depreciate more, but in warranty for the majority of this period therefore negating most unexpected bills.

Buy an older vehicle from a more premium marque
Or do you buy something from a marque that will retain more of its value when you come to sell it, but it's outside of warranty therefore bills are a distinct possibility.

Best example I could find
A BMW Z4M vs. Nissan 370z. One would have ~2yrs of warranty remaining and be a 2010 model (Nissan), the other would be 2007 or so and as such entirely your responsibility financially. The 370z would depreciate more but be safer on your pocket, whereas the Z4M isn't likely to drop much money, but if the gearbox goes, so does your wallet.

So, which would you say is better (not of the two cars listed, they're just examples, I mean the overarching concept)?
