When to call it quits with a car?

Ok I bought a second "fun" car (won't name it as it's a PH cliche one, probably obvious) back in March but have had some unforeseen mechanical hassle with it and I can already feel myself falling out of love with it. I have probably paid out at least half of what I paid sorting niggles out, the last hefty outgoing didn't even solve the problem it was supposed to.

I'm a bit stubborn so would love to get the car working perfectly as in all other areas it is a really sound tidy car. But then I don't really use it all that much or have much opportunity to use it other than to go out for a drive for the sake of it, and the roads round here aren't exactly the best in the country. The car is fun to drive but that initial buzz of driving a beautifully balanced car is fading and it's starting to feel gutless and the revvy driving style needed to make progress isn't really that attractive anymore.

The thought has crossed my mind to sell and I'm in two minds about it - either throw a bit more cash at it and get things 100% sorted (it's a relatively minor but potentially lengthy fault find) and try and get the bond back (as stupid as that sounds, I know you PH will "get" that!) or sell up soon and use the second car fund on other things or put towards saving for a really nice main car replacement sometime next year?

Always a tough one this isn't it, I need to sell my 996 really to get something 'practical' but after spending over £2500 on it this month I'm kind of tempted to hang on to it for a while!

Do some legendary journeys in it. I find I bond with cars if I've been to awesome places or had memorable times in it.

I've had this, in fact I'm having it right now (paid £2,500 for a car, have spent that again and I'm still not happy with it) and each time I've persevered with the car until it was right for me.

The logic being, I've spent XX pounds now, might as well keep the car to enjoy the spending to date. And usually, once the car is how I want it, I tend to keep it for 3 or 4 years to get my money's worth.

Trouble is, every car you buy will need this kinda spend if you're a real petrolhead perfectionist, so if you sell what you have, you'll only be resetting the process with the next car you buy, right?!

I agree - I think thats why your "first car" leaves such a strong memory. Also my band had a manky camo green massive Transit van which we had some epic times in around the country. I could have cried when that drove away with the new owner! And even my bog-standard Focus took me round the amazing Scottish roads for the first time. Funnily my current main car is probably my nicest certainly the most powerful but I've never really "bonded" with it. Maybe a bit of patience sorting the last niggles out and a road trip this summer is in order and then decide
