So I've a 4 foot long crack in the ceiling probably where a plasterboard joins.

Is there realistically anything I can do? I need to paint it so does this thick paint for cracked ceilings actually work?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Under a 'busy' room upstairs room? If there's a lot of traffic across the floor above I think you'd be better off taping it properly otherwise you'll be filling it over and over again.

Use this tape below & some fine filler. Slightly gouge out the crack with a screwdriver, T off the ends of it & brush out with a damp paintbrush before taping & filling.
