Punto engine replacement costs?

Afternoon all,

The engine in the Punto blew it's self apart today- will need a new one fitting.

It's a mk2 ~2000 plate, should still be under dealer warranty I hope.

However, planning for the worst- anyone know roughly how much it would cost to have a replacement engine fitted?

How long ago did you purchase the car? And did you take out extended warranty when purchased??

You should be able to do it for less than £500, but i'd bet some garages would try 3 times that.

Engines on eBay are a couple of hundred quid. Factor in a cambelt kit for £40 odd quid, waterpump for £20 and a clutch kit for £50 odd. Cheap oil for £15 then fit yourself.

Got to be the most cost effective way on a 11 year old car, plus they're well easy to work on

labour costs from your local garage to remove old and fit new probably £350 to £450 plus parts, plus the cost of the engine. is it worth fixing?

thats about right £350 to fit engine pus a cambelt/clutch a engine has got to be 200-300 for a decent one your not going to get much change out of £800 the cars only worth about £1000 if its in good nick with a long mot you might do better cutting your lose's

Labour time for a swap is 3.2 hours without AC (4.2 with).

If I was quoting for it I'd round those both up to take into account moving all the ancilliaries over etc.

Doing a cambelt on one of those engines whilst its out of the car takes about 2 minutes

The car would have had a value of around £500-£800 BEFORE the engine problem.

Probably easier to scrap it and buy another, similar age.

I would guess at HGF, wouldnt describe that as blowing it apart though, unless the OP has carried on driving it with the sump full of coolant!

Not worth it on that..
The most common cause of engine 'failure' in my book is the cambelt snapping, I am pretty sure they are non interence the old punto lumps so it may just be a question of a new belt kit and timing it up.

I would be very surprised if something internally has shat itself or its thrown a leg unless of course you dropped it into 2nd at 70?

Well, driving along, slight noise from engine bay, smoke from under the car.

Pull over (no drive at this point), open bonnet, blow out small oil fire.

The AA man came, found the hole on the casing at the back of the engine - pointed out the innards which you normally can't see!

Levels were checked 4 days ago- all good.

Sadly its not just a HG failure. Looks lunched.

I'm going to call the dealer in the morning- see what's what.

It came with a months engine & gearbox warranty so I suppose it's technically covered (had it for less than a month!).

We've not even got the paperwork through for it yet!

Result- Bet they never expect to have to pay out on that! Suspect it may result in a replacement vehicle/refund rather than new engine however...

That's what I was thinking.

I also made sure I paid on CC, just incase.

I gather I have extra protection should things go arse over tit.
