Cheap motorway muncher needed

I love my little 500 Abarth, but circumstances mean I'll soon need to to a 600 mile round trip every fortnight, up and down the M1, and the 500 isn't the best car to do that in
So, what do I need?
30+mpg
Comfort
Automatic
Max £1500
That's about it! I prefer cars that are mildly out of the ordinary, but have no brand loyalty to speak of. If it wasn't for the mpg I would most likely pick up another LS400.
Any ideas?

If not a 5 series, what about a 323i? Still got the smooth six, but in a lighter body so more economical? On a motorway run, you should see 35mpg.

Most 3 series are manual I find, has to be auto as it'll only be doing the motorway run and a manual in the inevitable traffic, roadworks and accident hold ups is annoying, especially if I never use the car for any spirited b-road blasts. http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3073343.htm

why only 30mpg?? 15k a year at 30mpg would cost you £3k in fuel but at 45mpg you'd save a grand a year or £40 a time. Personaly I'd go for something like a diesel avensis or something french and diesel being as motorway driving is never fun
Hence 30mpg+ i.e. not less than that 
Avensis is a possibility I guess, but that really is extremely bland and boring!

A 740 will sit at 30mpg on the run, just. At that budget though I'd probably look at something else - lots more 5 series' to pick from, and they'll probably be less leggy.
Personally I'd go for a Volvo S80 due to lower running costs, both are supreme mile munchers but you'll find a better, more reliable Volvo for 1500 sheets I should think, damn comfy too. Quite fancy one myself if I'm honest, though I'm not sure I'm ready for anything that boring. Needs must with big commutes though.
