Gents, I should know the answer to this but dont recall the best way to change the CV joint cover rubbers at the gearbox end. Any suggestions?

Honestly, I think there is just one way to do it properly. You will need to remove the CV. There is a special tool for installing the new covers.

Buy one of these and you don't have to pull it apart.

that looks like crap, stretches the boot so that it is no longer a tight fit over the joint and encorages a shop to just keep all the old greeas in the joint. no cleaning and repacking with new grease. no thanks

Working with Renault for many years...that was what was used but was not curved. The CV joint was dismantled & flooded with grease, reassembled then the boot was slid on and packed with grease. The boots returned easily to their original size. First time of doing it I was very sceptical, and it was a real struggle to push on, but it worked a treat.
