Just had a call about my scirocco that i have for sale. Not wishing to stereotype at all but the bloke sounded asian, he was quite difficult to understand. But only asked one question -

"Whats your lowest cash price" no questions about the condition or history of the car, just that. Now if i was ringing about a car i would aks some sensible questions especially given its not really a cheap banger i have for sale.

When i said i was looking for something that started with 15 ( as in 15k plus) for the car he said he would have a think and ring back in half an hour.

Very odd behaviour, no mention of viewing the car etc.

Suppose it was just a chancer hoping i would say go on then you can have it for 5k or something equally daft and thats the last i will hear from him? I really dont understand some people?

He might have a strict budget of say £14k and wondered if you would go to that. If not then there's no point in thinking about anything else before knowing.

expect alot of these phone calls when selling a car and even when they are followed by questions they're normally all answered in the add aswell

From my past experience and even current experience (selling a car at the minute), those people that ask a ridiculous number of questions rarely buy.

Especially if they ask questions that are in the advert.

The only time I'll call and ask questions is if the advert doesn't answer them, if not I call, ask if it's available then go there to view it.

People that try and bargain before viewing annoy me too, come and view the damn car, then make an offer.

I don't have a propblem people with that as a first question. If we're both not singing from the same sheet then there's no point in wasting any more time asking questions.

So travel 100 miles when the seller is never going to reduce the car to a price that's in your range. Hmmmmm sensible. Or you could ask over the phone.

Fair enough asking if they would take a certain amount, as they might only have 500 short of what you're asking.

But it's the ones that will want to stay on the phone haggling for ten minutes.

Each to their own, but I like to do everything in person.

Pointless trying to haggle for something you haven't even seen, it could have all sorts of problems, not be as described etc.

The amount of times someone has described something as mint, or taken flattering pictures then turned up and been surprised.....

I tend to go for cars I know I can afford should I decide to go for it.

I understand those that would have say a ten grand budget but look at cars at 10 and a half or 11 though in the hope they can get it within their budget.

But my post is aimed more at people that try and waste time on the phone, every serious buyer has always been straight forward, "Hi is the car still available", "where are you based", "when can I come to view it"

They then turn up, do what needs to be done, make an offer and then close the sale.

Another thing that annoys are people that ask a million questions about the condition of the car for example, fine ask a few questions, any dents, marks on the interior, but I'm on about those that will ask 50 questions, how many stone chips, how big are the stone chips, what side are the stone chips, how do the stone chips feel, where did you get the stone chips, are they pretty stone chips, can you see the stone chips, would I notice the stone chips, would my wife notice the stone chips, would my boss notice the stone chips, will a touch up pen cover up the stone chips....

Argh come and view the damn car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...but then we get people moaning on here asking "don't people want to sell their cars?" as they're interested in buying a car but the seller won't answer all their questions.

Yeah I guess it works both ways, if I call to enquire about the car and the person is rude, unhelpful or I can't understand them then I just hang up.

There's a fine line between asking too many questions in my opinion, especially when some questions asked would be better answered by actually viewing the car.

The best price merchants will usually try for further discount on arrival.

When you have to travel a fair distance (2nd last car I bought was 4 hours away)you really do have to ask a lot of questions before viewing. Saying that as someone who is currently selling you do get some quite bizzarre phone calls and emails

when they start the call by asking what is the lowest price and no other questions (by this point I have worked out exactly what sort of buyer they are) I always add £1,000 to what its advertised at - helps get rid of them.

Answer: "My car is advertised at a fair market price, taking into account its history and condition. I am confident the first serious buyer who comes to look at the car will be wanting to drive away in it."

I had a bloke once ring me up once when i had a car for sale and offer to just buy the engine. I was a bit confused and he explained 'i've got one of these but the engines gone i need a new one' and i told him im selling it as a car so it will go for car prices, if he wants to pay the asking price and buy the car and take the engine out later thats his business. Then he seemed to have a go at me for not selling it in bits?!?!

Then he tried to belittle the car when he said 'well mines the higher up model its got alloys, leather' then i cut in and said 'mines got an engine' and then he shut up. Never did hear back from him.

I don't get it either. You're buying a complicated and expensive machine not a pound of plain flour.

I hate it when people ring up and ask what's the lowest I'll take. At least come and view the thing, talk about it with me, and explain why you want to try and haggle me down.

I always tell people to never negotiate on the phone, never knock yourself down on price before they've even seen it, you're instantly on the back foot. If they're interested in the car they'll come and see it.
