I have to admit, Evo do some tasty articles from time to time.
This month's Evo reports on the recent top speed shoot out at Nardo organised by Continental. Conti have a new tyre rated at 224 mph, or something daft. Stacks of tuners pitched up (Ruf didn't.....big disappointment) including Techart. Their take on the GT2 managed 211 mph.
The huge surprise (for me) was "the winner", something called a 9ff. Never heard of it. This modified 996 Turbo did 231 mph, which I found astonishing.
I did a Google and found their website (in ze faterland) www.9ff.de. They offer something called "Super-Sportmotor FM96T- 5, 702 HP", a pretty serious upgrade package for the 996 Turbo. I am assuming that this was the engine that pushed their car in the Evo article to 231 mph. I also assume that their aero package is pretty slippery......they have ditched the huge intakes that the 996 Turbo has on the front of the car, to me the 9ff's face looks more like like that of a GT3.
I have e-mailed them to see what the cost of this package is and if they offer a warranty or not. Interestingly they do a switchable exhaust so you can go into whisper mode when pulling up at your digs after dark.
I also asked them (cheekily) how they thought their package compared to Ruf (phnar phnar).
I hope they reply to a lowly Boxster S owner, although I don't expect them to let me drive one of their creations at Vmax.
John.

Mind you Daz, this might tickle your fancy?:

"Performance Kit FM 96 X- 2, 531 HP, consist of:
-Valve system with control and end- pipes
-Metal catalytic converter.
-Air Filter
-ECU upgrade"

It's for the X50 (and would appear to include the whisper mode/shout mode switchable exhaust). Can only be 5 grand, surely? Should be enough for 200 mph.
They don't say how much and I have no idea if there's a warranty.

Not just yet, mein Dazric Hoonerheim; a certain beetle is currently on the receiving end of some additional Tech9 service expense.

I know you were concerned about cracks in your discs but as well as running slippery slicks it appears I've joined you in the toasted clampers department.

There's bound to be other stuff I can be shafted for too so hopefully the little bastard will grab the apus maximum just before the scheller straight in a couple of weeks.

DeR

In all seriousness when you can take some time out from running the sweetshop and administering the Northern wastelands, do take a look at that website. There is an option to read it in english, one of the conversions for the 996TT is 700+ bhp!

My car is currently running on all new rubber (400 miles ago) and all four discs have cracks though they are still servicable. Brunters should be a marvellous opportunity to finish em off before fitting new stoppers for the mid summer months and the Eurohoon invasion in september.

Johnny. With the head ruling the heart, I have to say for my meagre driving skills the X50 is powerful enough when out on the roads amongst the numptista riff raff. Although amongst the cognescenti at Brunters or on track of course I need more power!! I see you're booked in for Brunters, I'll have to show you what I mean.

Most of the 650/700bhp kits are very expensive i.e. £35k+ as going over 600bhp requires the engine to be opened up, stripped and rebuilt with exotic parts, such as titanium conrods.

There are many people who offer big-bhp upgrades, including Sportec, Hamann, 9FF, PSI, FVD, Gemballa, Manthey, APP, Roock, Ruf, TTP, Techart, without including the numerous US based offerings from Evo, Imagine, ByDesign, ZucZ, Powerhaus, SCarGo, AWE etc etc

A friend of mine was at APP in Holland at the weekend and they had built an 860bhp 996TT engine for a customer's race-car, which cost over £100k for the engine alone.

Guy,
I know you and Henry are visiting Herr Ruf soon, but would you say that you would only let his fellas mess with ya motor? Would you entrust the GT2 to anyone else? They do say Ruf's horses are that bit stronger than the rest.

Do a search for 9ff on Rennlist. Seems the US operation wasn't all it should have been.

Theres plenty of people out there that do great jobs, but it's their backup afterwards I worry about. I've heard nothing but good things about Ruf from many sources and their name is one that counts come re-sale, so it's the one for me.

I know G-Force here in the UK are doing a lot of work on mildly modified Porsches and they are looking into the warranty situation, so they may be a strong contender for UK owners. Chris there is also a great bloke to talk to and very open and helpful.

Thing is that I've always wanted a Ruf car, so that kind of sways me in their direction as well.

From my passenger ride with Daz at Brunters last time, may I suggest you either wear brown trousers or take a few spare pairs with you....such is the dynamic capabilities of the machine I got out feeling physically sick due to the cornering and braking forces involved!
