Hi All

Is it possible to replace the y-piece from above? I can see the clamp but not sure if it could actually be done without raising the car. It's a pre-serp 4.0 so a little more room for my big hands biggrin

Easy from above, but you do need to get under the car to undo the clamp to the main exhaust, typical U clamp, need to get alignment right otherwise it can hit the chassis on some cars. But easily done jacking up on the passenger side, slide in an axle stand and away you go, no need for ra,pes, lifts etc

Be prepared for plenty of twisting and shouting and make sure you reassamble to the main exhaust with planty of grease, makes it easier to refit and also burns off leaving a nice carbon seal in the joint, so no need for additional sealants. Manifold to Y piece there are many preference for sealant or not, Gun Gum works for me, but make sure you get the flanges lined up correctly to get the best seal.

I find it easier to gain access to the underside, unbolt exhaust and pull back a few inches.
The Y piece can be removed easily.

As for sealing at the clamp connection, I never do and haven't had a leak.

A gentle tap around the joint with a mallet to ensure a good "seating" while the clamps are tightened ensures a good seal, jmtw, (just my tuppence worth!).

Great point from above. To get the cla,ps done up properly tight then you need to tap them all the way round to get them to seat properly, do not try and do it by the clamp bolt along, it will snap if you try too hard with it to pull in the alignment.

Thanks guys. So the consensus is that it can't be done with the wheels on the ground. I'll get my friendly mechanic to put it on the ramp for a quick swap then.
