My girlfriend is the one who noticed this. When lying in bed with her head on my chest (and this is long after sex so I'm not 'wound up' biggrin ) she says my heart-rate is above what she'd expect. Low-and-behold I check it with the blood pressure meter we have lying around and it's in the low 80s...which for someone at 23, with no known medical conditions, and someone who works out pretty regularly seems kinda high.

Should I be concerned?

if you're worried about it before taking it, it's naturally going to increase a little bit. low 80's is reasonably high, but given the "norm" is 60-80 it's probably nothing to worry about. monitor it, it's best taken just as soon as you wake up or when you are asleep to get a true idea. also varies according to stress, whether you're lying, sitting, standing or have recently gone from sitting>standing as well as many, many other factors.

don't worry about it at the moment, but if you are, just keep an eye on it.

The time to take it is first thing in the morning before getting out of bed.It can be a measure of overall fitness top athletes will be down in the low 30's but I dont think its an exact science.

Mine is in the 80s whilst resting, I exercise regularly, normal obs are 60-80bpm(resting) I should not worry much unless you are experiencing other symptoms E.G Palpitations.

As above, take it first thing in the a.m.as soon as you wake up before getting out of bed.If it's in the 70's then make an appointment with your GP.Better safe..

I might add that the figure you originally quote is not your resting heart rate but is quite normal for someone after a bout of 'hide the sausage'.

My heart rate never ever drops below 82-85.

I reckon that's why I don't feel the cold as much as most people. Perhaps.

Your RHR is always low 80's? This is taken when you wake in the a.m. before you get out of bed?

I'd say the OP is completely normal.

I'm as follows:

sat at my desk right now: 76bpm
just after waking up: 52bpm

That isn't particularly high. Don't trust your O/H, see a doctor if you are worried.

My O/H used to wake me up in the middle of the night because I "wasn't breathing". I used to swim a lot and she didn't. rolleyes

I'll check again in the morning, but as far as I am aware it's never below 80.

You're saying it like it's a bad thing...... frown

I think you're worrying too much. The normal is up to 80, a few bpm over that isn't meant you're going to die.

It depends on how fit you are and your age. If you do regular exercise and are not over weight your HR will be lower than if your did not exercise and were overweight. A fit and helathy heart dosen't need to work as hard hence the lower HR but its not a good idea to generalise and you should check it out with your GP if you are concerned.
Blood pressure is a more worrying figure to check.yikes

You hear stories about legends in cycling having really low resting heartbeats but I think as long as its not at a dangerous level, then it doesn't make a lot of difference. Mine is around 45 and I'm certainly less fit than a mate of mine who had his done and it came out at 58.

I'm not, and never have been worried about it to be honest. Blood pressure is fine 118/81

I'll check it when i wake for interests sake.

I feel quite relaxed at the moment and it's 88

For non-exercising individuals, Tachycardia (abnormally fast heart rate) is only considered if your heart rate is above 100bpm. Anything above 60bpm is normal.

btw, sat at my desk and my RHR is 42bpm, but then, I'm a horse of a man. smile

yes It does seem to vary between people. I'm a fairly fit 34 year old; I train twice a day in CV related sports (running, swimming and cycling) and go to the gym once or twice a week (circuit training to support the sport I do). I also regularly kayak and walk. As mentioned above, my resting HR in the mornings is about 52. A friend of mine who does absolutely no exercise at all measured her heart rate at 58 whilst she was cooking me dinner! Her resting HR is therefore probably under 50.
