Right there is this Quad that tears about in the city centre of my town. Now i've been told that you drive it under a Car Licence cos it is basically one 4 wheels etc.
I wouldn't have a problem other than it is soooo bloody loud.
It's a Yamaha YFM 660 Raptor (yes a 600cc with a racing can!!)
Now it has no indicators, no speedo and as far as i'm aware no horn. It however does have a number plate both sides.
The other day he got pulled for driving like a goon but the plod (non traffic) never even had a look at the bike.
I've called up in the past because they once parked it up outside a bars beer garden and his mate was openly drinking a pint while sitting on it. Surely thats an offence if it's basically a car as your not allowed to drink in a car??. Police CCTV were watching but did nothing.
Anyone?
Any Traffic guys on here?

I'm not a trafpol, but I don't believe a vehicle has to has indicators and a speedo, in order to be MOT'd. Do you know what age the plate on the vehilce is? Is it a Q-plate? If so, there may be a number of con & use regs which commonly apply to modern cars but a quad such as this may be exempt from.
As for drinking, alcohol or otherwise whilst a vehicle is parked, there is no offence. Incidentally, you would not have to wear a crash helmet either.

This is the bike with the dude drinking in public/beer garden.
So Your allowed to drink in/on a vehicle as long as your not over the limit?
Well it is not a Q plate but GK02.
It is listed by the DVLA as an Yamaha Agrucultural Vehicile..no model listed.
Hmm It's possible that you don't MOT them.. and I knew about the Helmet (which is shocking seeing how fast the thing is)
How do you tell how fast your going?? and would it be arm signals??

AFAIA
Indicators are not mandatory on a bike, helmets mandatory only if it's got less than 3 wheels. Drinking ok if you are not driving at the time, whereupon you wouldn't be in proper control (as well as the obvious D/D angle). So all perfectly legal and above board.
Except....
Surely it MUST need a speedo? Even the most basic Q-plated scramble bikes have to be fitted with a vestigial speedo (usually mounted on the front wheel spindle) if they are to be used on the road. Tractors have to have speedos too, or so I was led to believe - all the ones I've driven were so equipped, and some of them were pretty basic otherwise!

I know they look like they go like stink, but do they go over 25mph? If they don't, no speedo required:
Regulation 35 of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986:
35(1) Every motor vehicle shall be fitted with a speedometer which, if the vehicle is first used on or after 1st April 1984, shall be capable of indicating speed in both miles per hour and kilometres per hour, either simultaneously or, by the operation of a switch, separately, unless exempted by paragraphs (2) and (3) of this regulation.
NOTE:
This regulation shall not apply to a vehicle in respect of which a passenger vehicle approval certificate has been issued under the Motor Vehicles (Approval) Regulations 1996, if it complies with or is exempt from the approval requirements relating to speedometers.
(2) Paragraph (1) above does not apply to:
(a) a vehicle having a maximum speed not exceeding 25 mph;

The average Quad that does 20-30 is a single geared 125cc this is a 660cc liquid-cooled, 5-valve engine, with a five-speed gearbox.
think i read the top speed was 83 mph
Okay as for the drinking while in a car i've seen a person drinking in the passenger seat of a car both stationary/moving and the police have "had a word" each time.
Maybe it was due the drinking in public ban we have (beer garden exempt)

After asking Yamaha if they are street legal, they say they no longer supply a V5 with them as they are meant to be for off road agicultral use apparently.
So you'd have to get a second hand one.. however the bike that is in the picture is also registered as agucultral machine (wether that means it's for that purpose or not i dunno)
Any traffic cops want to explain what an agrucultural (sp) is treated differently? and does that mean it's fully legal... still thought tractors had to have a speedo tho.
