American spec?

I was following this e39 earlier and from a distance I thought "why has he put a square plate on the back?" Then I realized that it was designed to take a square plate, at first I thought he may have modded it then I thought American Spec??

I can't see if it's LHD or RHD from the pic?

ETA - If RHD it's more than likely Japanese!

I could be wrong but looking at the way the interior mirror is angled, RHD? So possibly Jap spec? As I believe they have square recesses and number plates. Like I say though, I can't quite see which way the mirror is angled, but it looks towards RHD.

I thought BMW only exported left hookers to Japan.

Left-hand drive cars are popular in Japan with a certain type of person for the perceived image they portray. BMW and almost everyone else is happy to export RHD to Japan.

No, but you can buy LHD versions from dealers at special request. It's far more common than in the UK as it implies the car is a special import. I would assume it goes back to days of long ago when German cars were only available as LHD and seen as a status symbol.

I could be wrong; but it's possible some RHD models are assembled in the Far East as knock down kits; so the LHD would be the genuine, German, article.
